Giant cannas are the most spectacular of the canna lilies, capable of reaching up to 2.80 m in height. With their vigorous growth, lush foliage and imposing presence in the garden, they look superb at the back of a border, near a patio or in an exotic setting. Their silhouette resembles a banana plant, with large green or purplish leaves, and they flower all summer long. These tall cannas thrive in full sun, in rich, deep soil that remains moist in summer, and need space to reach their full potential.
Canna musifolia is impressive with its banana-like appearance; it has few rivals for adding scale to an exotic border and tolerates temperatures down to -15°C. Equally tall, Canna indica ‘Purpurea’ bears dark, architectural foliage, accompanied by small orange-red spikes. Canna ‘Erebus’ is a magnificent plant for banks and very wet ground, where its vegetation and pinkish-orange flowering display their full beauty. 'Wyoming’ is a slightly shorter cultivar (1.50 m) that combines large purplish leaves with bright orange flowers; it creates a very colourful effect in large summer borders.
