Wonderful canna. Beautiful foliage and plenty of lovely flowers. We brought it indoors for the winter but it was still in bloom. Thank you very much!

More information

This modest-sized canna develops magnificent dark purple-violet foliage, from which emerge flowers of a fairly vibrant salmon-pink. It flowers from summer to autumn, in the form of flower spikes that contrast pleasantly with its rich foliage colour. This fast-growing plant is easy to cultivate in fertile and moist soil, in the sun. The rhizomes should be lifted in autumn and protected during winter.

Description

Canna 'Angelique' is a medium-sized cultivar with high ornamental value, distinguished by its large, dark purple-violet leaves that perfectly complement its long-lasting summer flowering in a lovely bright salmon-pink. It grows quickly and makes a big impact in an exotic flower bed, as well as in a beautiful pot on a patio.

Canna 'Angelique' is a rhizomatous and herbaceous plant from the Cannaceae family. Its ancestors are native to tropical areas of Asia and America. This hybrid quickly forms a lush clump, reaching a height of 80cm (32in) and occupying about 60 to 70cm (24 to 28in) of ground space. It has large, entire, broad, oblong leaves with sheathing bases. The shiny lamina boasts purplish hues and brown highlights, and is fully covered by prominent veins.

Flowering takes place from July-August to September-October, in the form of salmon-pink flowers with red and yellow throats. Each flower, measuring 6 to 8cm (2 to 3in) in diameter, is asymmetrical and composed of 3 fused petals at the base, 3 sepals, and visible stamens. The plant easily propagates vegetatively by producing numerous offshoots.

Canna 'Angelique' is perfect for gardens, patios, and balconies. It is very easy to grow if it is given water and nutrients during its growth period. It should be stored away from strong frost and excessive humidity in winter. In a large flower bed, it can be combined with banana trees such as Musa velutina or M. ventricosa, Ricinus communis (the castor oil plant), kniphofia, agapanthus, or even with dahlias with purple foliage

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs after the last frosts. The soil should be moist but well-drained (if necessary, lighten your soil with turf or sand). Space them 40cm (16in) apart. Cover with 5cm (2in) of soil. Apply organic fertiliser at planting and at least once a month. Water regularly so that the soil never completely dries out. Its flowering will be more beautiful if it is planted in partial shade.

Dig up the stumps when the first frost arrives or just before. Leave some soil around the roots, then store in a frost-free place, even if deprived of light. Divide the stumps in March, if necessary. Replant the divisions in pots, in a bright and heated area to start them off, then plant them in the garden when frost is no longer a concern. In recent years, due to the magnitude of the task, we have decided to leave the plants in the garden all year round. As soon as the first white frosts arrive, we cut back the foliage to the ground and then cover the stumps with a 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) layer of straw or dead leaves. This mulching can be done in all regions. The important thing is that the frost should never reach the rhizomes that are just below the surface of the soil. We have seen that this method yields better results in our garden: the stumps are more robust, the plants are larger, and the flowering is more abundant.

Canna 'Angelique' can still withstand brief frosts of around -5°C (23°F) in well-drained and fairly dry soil, under a protective mulch.
