Graden Merit
This Crocosmia offers, in summer, long arched stems adorned with large orange and yellow flowers intensely striate with red. Compact, sturdy, and hardy, this variety enlivens sunny borders of exotic or more natural style and proves less invasive than old montbretias. It also provides very beautiful cut flowers for summer cut flower arrangements.

Description

Crocosmia ‘Scorchio’ is a montbretia from the Firestars series, chosen for its large bicoloured orange and yellow flowers, marked with a red flame at the heart. This perennial quickly forms a neat clump, topped in summer with arching, very floriferous stems that bring a border to life with the slightest breeze. Hardy and reliable, this selection works just as well in the garden as in a large container, and offers beautiful stems for cut flower arrangements. A winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, it has proven its worth!

Belonging to the genus Crocosmia (Iridaceae family), this cormous perennial has distant ancestors native to the prairies of southern Africa. ‘Scorchio’ is part of the Firestars horticultural series, created by English breeder Paul Lewis and launched in 2018 with the Walter Blom nursery. This series offers several compact, floriferous, and less invasive montbretia cultivars. 'Scorchio' is hardy to –10/–15 °C in well-drained soil.
The plant forms an upright, dense clump 80 to 90 cm tall and 40 to 60 cm wide, composed of long, medium-green, lanceolate leaves. Its sturdy flower stems bear clusters of large, widely open, funnel-shaped flowers, with a bright yellow heart, broadly tinted orange and streaked with red. They bloom from July to September. As with all crocosmias, the aerial growth disappears in winter, with the corms resting in the soil.

In the garden, Crocosmia ‘Scorchio’ should be placed in full sun, in the middle of a border, in a loose, cool, but well-drained soil. Its flamboyant colour works wonders with the coppery orange of Agastache ‘Kudos Mandarin’, the pink spikes of Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Red Head’, the ruby-red pompons of Knautia macedonica ‘Mars Midget’, or the airy clumps of Vernonia lettermanii. In a cut flower arrangement, its flowering will be enhanced by a few stems of upright panic grass (Panicum).

Planting and care

Plant the Crocosmia Scorchio corms in full sun, preferably in spring. They require an aerated and well-drained soil, which does not retain too much water in winter when they remain in the ground. Conversely, they demand a cool soil in summer. Work the soil well at planting time and, if necessary, incorporate sand. They should be covered with at least 5 to 8 cm of soil (the deeper they are buried, the better they withstand frost) and spaced about fifteen cm apart. They like rich soils. Apply a fertiliser at planting time, which you should renew each spring. While they prefer a well-draining soil for winter, crocosmias need plenty of water during their growing season and cannot tolerate any drought in summer.
In regions with harsh winters, it is safer to lift the corms once the foliage has dried to store them in a frost-free location. Another option is to cover the bed with a thick insulating carpet at the onset of winter, removing it in March.

Crocosmia Scorchio can withstand short frosts of around -10/-15°C in perfectly drained soil: consider planting it on a nice mound of light soil where water will not stagnate. Protect the stump with a thick mulch that will insulate it from both cold and excessive moisture.

Crocosmias love the climates of our country's oceanic coastline, which suit them particularly well. Contrary to what is sometimes read, these are not plants adapted to the Mediterranean climate, which is far too dry in summer in a garden that does not benefit from regular watering.
