Description

Lilium ‘Pieton’ is an Asiatic lily prized for its bicolour yellow and burgundy flowers, which enliven the garden from early summer. Its star-shaped, widely open, upward-facing corollas are eye-catching in borders and cut flower arrangements. This robust and reliable bulb returns faithfully year after year, provided it has well-drained soil. A variety with bright and refined tones.

A member of the Liliaceae family, Lilium ‘Pieton’ belongs to the group of Asiatic hybrids, known for their straight, sturdy stems bearing several flowers at the top. It is an American introduction by Robert Griesbach, introduced by Lily Company B.V. in 2011 and registered in 2012. The plant reaches between 60 and 80 cm in height, sometimes up to 1 m for the largest bulbs planted in rich, moist soil. Each stem bears 4 to 7 large, 10 to 15 cm diameter flowers, well open and facing upwards. The stems are adorned with numerous lanceolate, deep green leaves, inserted in a spiral. The flowers have six well-spread tepals (or "petals"): the base is deep yellow, broadly coated with a dark burgundy towards the centre, with small, darker pits around the stamens. Flowering occurs from June to July, on well-established plants. The above-ground growth is deciduous: it dies back before winter and re-emerges from the ground in spring.

In the garden, Lily ‘Pieton’ is used in small clumps in perennial borders, large sunny borders, or in large pots near the house. This variety fits well in a contemporary border or in a more classic setting. You can pair it with Panicum virgatum ‘Shenandoah’, the large daisies of Leucanthemum ‘Becky’ and the very fine foliage of bronze fennel. In a more sophisticated style, pair it with the almost black flowers of columbine Aquilegia ‘Black Barlow’‘African Queen’ or LandiniLilies will create a beautiful background that will highlight the elegance of ‘Pieton’.

Planting and care

The 'Pieton' lily is not fussy about soil, provided it is well-drained and not excessively chalky or acidic. It appreciates rich, light compost soils. Plant it in full sun with its base in shade, preferably in spring, burying the bulbs 15 cm deep in a pocket of soil mixed with leaf mould. Surround them with a pocket of sand to prevent rot and slug attacks, while also allowing them to swell more easily. Mark the planting location, as growth only begins in April. If red lily beetles appear, treat them immediately, as their larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them by hand, but be careful, they drop as soon as they are touched, so place a box underneath.

On the terrace, you can create sumptuous pot displays with lilies. Choose a container that is wide and deep enough (at least 16 cm in diameter for 1 bulb). Fill it with a mixture of garden soil, leaf mould and sand. Plant the lilies in groups of 3 to 5 bulbs, 10-15 cm apart, then water thoroughly. Place the pots in a cool room, or outdoors once the frosts have passed. The ambient temperature should be around 12°C. When the shoots appear, move the pot to a conservatory or very bright room, at a temperature of about 18°C. Apply liquid fertiliser twice a month until the flower buds appear.
