Description

The White Malope trifida is a interesting for its large flowers in immaculate pure white. It is an annual plant that charms with its generous flowering throughout the summer. It adds a touch of elegance and brightness to borders, beds, and bouquets. Malopes form dense, bushy clumps, creating harmonious compositions in rustic or romantic gardens. Best sown in place in spring and grown in deep, well-drained soil in full sun.

Malope trifida is a herbaceous annual plant in the mallow family, closely related to mallows, tree mallows, and hollyhocks. This wild species is native to the western Mediterranean, particularly Spain.

The White Malope trifida completes its life cycle in a few months, from sowing to seed formation. It forms a bushy, branched clump, with a height of 45 to 60 cm. Throughout the summer, large funnel-shaped, 5 to 7 cm diameter flowers appear. The silky texture of the petals enhances their white colour around a subtle pale green throat. The flowers are short-lived, but the plants produce a profusion of buds that succeed each other throughout the summer. The flowering, visited by pollinating insects, is followed by decorative fruiting for dried bouquets. The slightly glossy, rounded, trilobed leaves are a vivid green. Malopes develop from a taproot, making transplanting a bit tricky with well-developed plants. This is why it is preferable to sow them directly in the ground.

The White Malope brings light to the garden in midsummer. This annual easily withstands high temperatures, looking more beautiful and floriferous under intense sun. Sow it in borders among other plants. This plant is valuable for filling gaps in perennial and shrub borders and in brand-new gardens. Pair it, for instance, with Cosmos 'Sensation Purity', with its large white flowers or Nigella damascena 'Miss Jekyll Blue', featuring delicate blue flowers. To add volume, include Lavatera 'Mont Blanc', another easy-to-grow annual. To complete the scene, plant a few Victoria Blue Mealy Cup Sage which produces deep blue spikes.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Sow Malope seeds from March to April at 20°C, maintain at a temperature of 20°C until germination, then transplant into the ground as soon as the plants are manageable and all risk of frost is passed. They can be sown directly in place, in April-May, as soon as all risk of severe frost is passed. Sow thinly and thin out to leave one plant every 30 cm.

Cultivation:

In the wild, Malope trifida grows in fields, on rocky slopes, in copses or thickets, on limestone soils. It appreciates warm climates and fairly fertile, well-drained soils. Excess moisture makes it susceptible to rust, and can even cause it to disappear due to a fungal disease attacking the plant's collar. It tolerates partial shade, but its habit will be more compact and the plant will be more floriferous in full sun.
