Description

The 'The Châtelaine' Russel lupin offers large upright spikes of bi-coloured, pink and white flowers at the beginning of summer. This perennial plant grows in clumps to make a sensation in your borders, beds, and containers. It also produces excellent cut flowers. Its lush foliage is deeply divided and a beautiful deep green. The easy and hardy Russell Lupins thrive in any well-drained, non-alkaline garden soil and in full sun. Sow in place in spring.

The 'The Châtelaine' variety is part of the Russell Lupin range, which are hybrids obtained by cross-breeding Lupinus polyphyllus, a perennial plant native to North America, and Lupinus hartwegii, an annual Mexican species. Some varieties were selected in the 1930s by a gardener named George Russell, a passionate Lupin enthusiast who gave his name to the range. From the Fabaceae family, these herbaceous perennials are appreciated for their robustness, floriferousness, and ease of cultivation. The Russell Lupin 'The Châtelaine' forms a beautiful, 90 cm tall bush when in flower, 60 to 75 cm wide. Its green leaves are palmate. In June-July, large upright flower clusters up to 50 cm long bloom. These spikes are densely filled with pea-like, 1 to 3 cm, pink and white flowers. It is worth noting that the flowers are slightly fragrant.

It is very easy to find a place in the garden for a 'The Châtelaine' lupin. With its pastel-toned flowers, this perennial plant will integrate perfectly into a romantic bed. Here is a selection of plants that will complement your lupin: Delphinium Guardian White with double white flowers, Buenos Aires verbena with purple flowers, and black-flowered hollyhock to add dimension to the overall composition. Lighten the arrangement with a grass, like Panicum virgatum Purple Breeze.

Planting and care

Sow your 'The Châtelaine' lupins in groups of 3 to 5 seeds directly in place from April to June. With their taproot, they do not tolerate transplantation well. Sow them in well-prepared and loosened soil, enriched with potting soil or compost, and cover them with 5 mm of substrate. The ideal temperature for germination should be between 16 and 20°C, and it usually takes 18 to 25 days. Thin out your seedlings, keeping only the strongest plant in each group, and leave a distance of 30 to 40 cm between each plant. Be careful of slugs that enjoy their young leaves. Flowering will only occur the following year. You can also sow in September-October.

Lupins are easy to grow and thrive in full sun or with light shade, especially in the south. Any good, well-drained, non-calcareous garden soil will suit them. They appreciate a rich, moist, well-drained, and preferably neutral to acidic soil. Renew your perennial lupins every 3 or 4 years.

Remove faded flowers as they appear to prolong flowering and prevent the seeds from naturally self-sowing. Cut back yellowed stems and leaves to the ground in autumn and provide a mulch of dead leaves or straw during winter.
