Description

Delphinium 'Guardian White' is a highly sought variety for cut flowers, due to the size of its stems and spikes which are ideal for bouquets. It blooms early in summer from a compact clump of foliage. The sturdy spikes are densely packed with double, pearl white and shimmering flowers. As with other cultivars in the Guardian series, the colour is very uniform. The vigorous plant is not very tall, but eye-catching.

The 'Guardian White' Delphinium belongs to the ranunculus family. It comes from Delphinium elatum, the tall larkspur, which is found in moist meadows at high altitudes in the Pyrénées-Orientales, and in all the Alps of Europe, as well as in southern Europe, central and eastern Europe, up to Siberia, Mongolia and China. This plant has given rise, among others, to the famous 'Pacific Giant' series and the 'Guardian' series. It is a large herbaceous perennial plant with a short lifespan, but rapid growth. 'Guardian White' forms a clump of deeply cut palmate, rich green foliage, from which floral spikes about 1.20 m (4ft) high and 30 cm (12in) wide emerge in summer. Flowering takes place from June to September and is loved by pollinators. The flowers are double, densely clustered on tall, upright and sturdy spikes. They have shimmering, pearl white petals, around a large collar, called a "fly" or "bee". The plant develops from a woody rhizome that penetrates vertically into the ground.

Delphiniums or Larkspurs are towering plants that provide structure to borders with their majestic presence. Their tall volume takes up minimal space on the ground and is essential amidst more rounded plants. They can be planted in groups or as solitary specimens, in front of a dark hedge of evergreen shrubs or conifers. They thrive in a sunny position sheltered from strong winds, in deep, humus-bearing soil which remains moist even in summer. Plant them alongside perennial geraniums with domes covered in flowers, baby's breath for lightness, and ornamental garlic for contrast in form. They blend equally well in a formal border or a more informal meadow. 'Guardian White' fits well in a white garden, thanks to its uniform and pure white colour, alongside roses, daylilies, or peonies, for example. It blooms for a long time as long as the flower spikes are cut off as they fade and provides excellent flowers for bouquets.

Note: From March to September, the stems of our delphiniums are pruned short to promote better branching of the rootstock and achieve optimal rooting. This also prevents the stems from breaking during transportation.

Planting and care

Delphinium 'Guardian White' is not difficult to grow but still requires some precautions: delphiniums dislike heavy and damp soils, as well as dry and poor soils. The soil that suits them is deep soil, rich in humus, non-compact, moist even in summer, but not excessively wet in winter, and sheltered from strong winds. In these conditions, they will live for many years. Also, watch out for slugs that can cause damage at the beginning of the growing season. Full sun will limit the risk of mildew. Install tall stakes around the plants.
