Description

Zinnia elegans Molino Mixed is a variety of Zinnia with single heads in a cheerful mix of bright and vibrant colours. Compact and branching, it is ideal for borders or the foreground of flowerbeds, and also charming in bouquets.

Highly appreciated for their robustness, vibrant colours and ease of cultivation, Zinnias are a reliable choice for the garden. Versatile, they can be planted in borders, flowerbeds, or even in vegetable gardens, between rows of vegetables.

Zinnia elegans Molino Mixed has a sturdy, compact and branching habit, reaching a height and width of 40cm (16in). For an original border, you can pair it with Calibrachoa 'Superbells Cherry Star' and Cephalophora aromatica 'Pineapples'.

Native to the southern United States to Argentina and belonging to the Asteraceae family, Zinnia is an annual herbaceous plant. It bears vigorous flowers with vivid and bright colours, whose size and shape vary depending on the varieties, on stiff and upright stems. Its leaves are linear to ovate, pointed and a beautiful medium green. Zinnia's flowering is generous, starting in July and lasting until the first frosts. It is a nectar-rich plant that will delight bees and butterflies.

Zinnias thrive in full sun and withstand high temperatures well, as long as they are watered regularly. They perform best in neutral, rich, and well-drained soil. Although not demanding, they can tolerate just average garden soil.

To encourage and support its long flowering period, it is advisable to regularly remove faded flowers. Easy to grow, it can occasionally be susceptible to powdery mildew; a problem that can be easily avoided by not planting it in a confined location and being careful not to wet its foliage.

Planting and care

Sow the 'Molino Mixed' Zinnia seeds directly, from April to May, in loose and warm soil. Do not bury the seeds too deeply (3mm is sufficient) and space them 30cm (12in) apart. Keep the soil moist until germination, which usually takes between 7 and 14 days.

For early flowering, sow from March to April (indoors, at a temperature between 15 and 25°) in a tray filled with good seed compost, which you should keep moist but not waterlogged. When the plants are large enough to handle, transplant them into buckets. Gradually acclimatize your Zinnias to cooler conditions for about two weeks before planting them in the garden, once the risk of frost has passed. Space the plants 30cm (12in) apart.

Zinnias thrive in the sun and withstand high temperatures, as long as they are watered a little. They do best in neutral, rich, and well-drained soil. Although not very demanding, they will still tolerate average garden soil. They may occasionally be susceptible to powdery mildew, a nuisance that can be easily avoided by not planting them in a confined location and being careful not to wet their foliage. Be cautious of slugs, as they love to feast on their tender young leaves during planting.
