Description

Jasminum Starry Night is a rather fantastic hybrid jasmine variety that combines the divine flowering of Jasminum polyanthum and the legendary robustness of Jasminum officinale. Its small white star-shaped flowers emerge from pink buds, flowers and buds cluster on generous panicles that exude a sweet fragrance. This jasmine blooms between spring and summer, depending on the climate. It is a climbing shrub liana with voluble stems and more or less evergreen cut foliage in winter. The cold resistance of this variety, though relative, still allows it to be adopted in open ground outside Mediterranean regions, in a sheltered location.

Jasmine Starry Night ('Mormin1201') belongs to the Oleaceae family and is a horticultural creation by Branded Garden Products Ltd. (UK) dating back to 2022. Relatively hardy, this jasmine is easily cultivated in open ground in areas of our territory where the temperature does not drop below -9°C (15.8°F) for short periods. Elsewhere, it is perfectly possible to cultivate it in a large container to overwinter it like a citrus plant. This liana will reach a height of between 3 and 4m (10 and 13ft), spreading over 2m (7ft) to 2.50m (8ft), with relatively rapid growth. The flowering is remarkably abundant and fragrant, lasting one to three months. Generally occurring in spring (between May and June), it can be later in cooler regions (July-August). The plant is covered with large inflorescences composed of a multitude of dark pink floral buds that open into small star-shaped, 3 cm (1in) diameter, white flowers with an intoxicating fragrance. The foliage is composed of pinnate leaves with 5 to 7 elongated and pointed leaflets, a bright green colour. They are deciduous below -5°C (23°F) or evergreen if the temperature is milder. The stems become woody and light brown with age. When young and green, they wrap around any support, branches, wire mesh, or trellis. The young branches, which bear the foliage, are flexible, green, glabrous (or weakly pubescent), angular or channelled.

Jasmine Starry Night climbs over bushes, trellises, arches, pergolas, staircase railings, or balconies. It can also be planted in a container on a terrace to fully enjoy its intense fragrance. It can be paired with other climbing plants that flower at different times or simultaneously: the Alpine Clematis 'Ocean Pearl' with double flowers in April-May, the small Wisteria 'Cecilia', the climbing rose 'James Galway' , and many others, according to each gardener's taste.

Planting and care

Jasminum 'Starry Night' should be planted preferably in spring, in a fresh, fertile and well-drained soil, in full sun and sheltered from cold winds. The presence of limestone in the soil is well tolerated. Mulch the base and water generously as soon as the flowers appear. If the stump is well established, it will withstand short frosts of -9°C (15.8°F) and new shoots will emerge in spring. Pruning is necessary at the end of winter, when vegetation starts. Once well rooted, this plant tolerates drought quite well. It can tolerate partial shade, but flowering is more abundant in the sun. Avoid exposing it to cold drafts to preserve its flowers. In cold regions, plant the jasmine against a south-facing wall, which will give it some warmth.

For container cultivation: choose a container of 50cm (20in), with a good, rich, fresh and light soil, specially designed for Mediterranean plants. From early spring to mid-September, enrich with liquid fertilizer every 15 days, always on moist soil. In spring and summer, it needs abundant watering, but in winter let the soil dry out a little between two waterings. Jasmine is very vigorous even in a pot and can become bare at the base. In this case, old branches should be pruned, leaving only 3 young shoots. In winter, place it in a heated conservatory or greenhouse, at around 15°C (59°F) and with plenty of light. Regularly spray the foliage with non-limestone water to prevent attacks from red spiders.
