Description

English rose James Galway is a climbing variety that stands out for the unique and perfect architecture of its large flowers. These are very double and beautifully formed, adorned with numerous petals perfectly ordered in a gradient from tender pink to deeper pink from the outside to the centre of the flower, with a typical, 'old rose' scent. It is a healthy and reliable variety, with long almost thornless stems, which means it can be planted near a path, or to bloom over an arch.

This climbing rose reaches its large, strong but flexible, almost bare stems, to 3.50 m (11ft) above the ground and covers an area 1.5 m (5ft) wide. It can also be trained as a bush, forming a very beautiful tall, wide, and rounded mass. The stems bear beautiful, shiny, abundant, dark green and very healthy foliage. The flowering is perpetual from June to October if the soil remains moist, and covers the plant. The large flowers, in a gradient of shimmering pink to very pale, with a diameter of 13-15 cm (5-6in) and quite flat, are a treat for the eyes and nose. They are composed of more than 40 petals, curiously wavy at the edges. They tend to slightly incline downwards, which allows one to admire their beauty and enjoy their medium to light fragrance.

Climbing rose James Galway is incomparable for filling large spaces and giving a slightly softer look, planted above formal flowerbeds. It ideal for hiding dead trees, unattractive fences, and ugly buildings or sheds. Trained on an arch, near the terrace, or above an entrance, it will create a romantic and fragrant bower. As it only flowers for three months, it can be paired, for example, with clematis texensis Princess Diana, Japanese wisteria, white jasmine, or bright pink annual sweet pea.

Obtained by David Austin in 2000. It is an English rose of the Leander type.

Planting and care

Plant your English Rose James Galway in a sunny or lightly shaded position. English roses are fairly tolerant but do not like excessive limestone. They will thrive in any garden as long as the soil is well-worked and fertile. To plant your rose, dig the soil well and add fertiliser, such as bonemeal, at the bottom of the planting hole. Water generously after planting to remove air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to aid rooting.

Pruning English roses is essential for flowering.

For climbing roses: the stems that flowered the previous year should be reduced to 3 or 4 buds or pruned to 15cm (6in). The new sturdy stems should be tied and the old stems removed if necessary. Choose an outward-facing bud for a more elegant form. Also, remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Make pruning cuts at a slant above a bud. Deadhead regularly to stimulate the development of new buds.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose, it is a natural phenomenon.
