Description

We offer you this Collection of three 'Orange and Purple Inspiration' perennial plants perfectly in line with the colourful garden palette of our spring-summer 2023 catalogue. It brings together 3 perennial plants whose foliage or flowers embody the marvellous combination of purple tones and the vibrant allure of orange. The flamboyant foliage of the grass remains decorative in all seasons and enhances both the dark corollas of the daylily and the cheerful daisies of the echinacea. Whether in an exotic setting with cannas, in a contemporary flowerbed, in a planter or a large flower pot, success is guaranteed!

The collection consists of 3 plants:

- x 1 Uncinia rubra 'Everflame': a compact, dense, gracefully arched evergreen perennial, similar to sedges, with a grass-like appearance. This variety stands out with remarkably colourful foliage in shades of cherry red, orange, and coppery pink. Hardy down to -10°C (14°F), it prefers mild climates and humus-bearing, moist to wet soil. Height: 30 cm (12in), width: 40 cm (16in).

- x 1 Daylily 'Crimson Pirate': this variety offers 11 cm (4in), star-shaped flowers adorned with a velvety burgundy robe with red reflections, illuminated by a discreet yellow and green throat. The narrow and delicate petals add elegance to this variety. A great classic, floriferous and robust no matter the climate! Height: 70 cm (28in) (when in bloom), width: at least 60 cm (24in).

- x 1 Echinacea purpurea 'Sundown': an coneflower that stands out for the rare colour of its beautiful 7 cm (3in) flowers: vermillion orange slightly tinged with pink when opening, around a prominent brown-red cone. In summer, the plant produces several flowers per stem, and up to 15 flowers per plant. This perennial is easy to grow in full sun, in any good garden soil. Height: 50 cm (20in), width: 30 cm (12in).

These perennials can easily be integrated into a flowerbed in gardens of any size. Their warm colours will be enhanced by white or blue blooms. To complete your garden display, consider the 'Happy Single Kiss' dahlia with salmon single corollas, the 'Red Wine' canna with purple foliage and red flowers, add some snow-in-summer, a 'California Sunset' shrubby sage... And in a technicolor planter, add some forget-me-nots or blue lobelia, for example.

Tips: plant 6 per square metre to create a dense flowerbed that reaches its full potential in 3-4 years, or 9 plants per square metre for a dense flowerbed in just 2 years. Place the Everflame uncinia in front of the other two plants, so it remains visible during the flowering of the other two. Outside of mild oceanic climates, this false grass should be protected from severe frosts. In a planter, use professional potting compost.

Planting and care

These perennials are planted in sun in the spring, in well-prepared and properly drained soil. Mix your garden soil with compost, add gravel if your soil is very clayey and compact. You can also plant them in a container or a pot with drainage holes at the bottom, wide enough to accommodate them: at least 60 cm (24in) wide. Use good quality horticultural compost.

The Uncinia Everflame is preferably grown in non-calcareous, humus-rich, well-drained soil, but remaining moist during the growing season, in the sun in cool regions and rather in partial shade in regions with hot summers. In a container, place it on a saucer filled with water. It is somewhat sensitive to cold (down to -10 °C (14°F) at the lowest).

Plant your Hemerocallis 'American Revolution' in good garden soil that is not too clayey and enriched with humus and compost. This perennial has a good tolerance of summer droughts and is not affected by winter frosts. Hemerocallis thrive equally well in partial shade as in full sun, 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight is sufficient for them. Plant by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface.

The Purple Coneflower 'Sundown' reaches maturity within 3 years. Once established, it requires no particular care and is highly resistant to pests and diseases. It should be planted in a sunny location. Remove faded flowers as they appear. Divide the clump when flowering slows down. As the plant ages, it becomes more susceptible to aphid attacks and powdery mildew.

Tips: plant 6 plants per square metre to achieve a dense and mature cover within 3-4 years, or 9 plants per square meter to achieve a dense cover within just 2 years.
