Although planted on a mound to avoid excessive moisture, the young plant does not grow... I don't understand?

Description

Agastache barberi 'Firebird' is a perennial with an upright habit and very floriferous, which self-sows. From July to September, it produces spikes of tubular flowers in orange colour. Its foliage is a greyish green. This deciduous foliage is composed of lanceolate (lance-shaped) and opposite leaves, with a velvety underside. They are fragrant, with an aroma similar to mint, licorice, and lemon. The aromatic leaves are used for infusions or teas, as well as for garnishing and flavouring dishes.

When mature, Agastache can reach a height of 60cm (24in). Native to China, Japan, and Mexico, the plant has good hardiness. The flowers are highly appreciated by bees and other insects, making it a melliferous plant, meaning it contains substances collected by pollinating insects or some birds that transform into honey. Butterflies also enjoy it.

It can be found in flower beds, borders, and mixed borders. It enhances summer gardens. Its flowers are ideal for creating dried bouquets. Agastache pairs well with Chrysanthemums maximum and Heleniums.

Planting and care

Agastache barberi 'Firebird' thrives in full sun or partial shade, sheltered from cold winds. It is a plant that withstands drought well. It is suitable for any type of well-drained, rather moist and rich soil. When planting, space Agastaches 45cm (18in) apart, as they do not like root competition. Easy to grow, protect it from frost with a winter mulch in cold regions during the first few years. If necessary, water the plant, especially during flowering. In spring, trim the faded inflorescences and clean the clump. It is not particularly prone to diseases or pests that can hinder its flowering, except for powdery mildew, which can affect the leaves during dry periods.
