Description

The Delosperma ashtonii, also known as Ashton's Delosperma, is a small succulent plant ideal for covering the ground between rocks in rockeries, adorning the tops of walls, or flowering in hanging baskets. This low-growing perennial is adorned with bright flowers, carmine pink with a white centre, for long weeks. Like all Delosperma, this botanical species thrives in full sun in lean, well-drained soils, even very dry in summer. But unlike many others, it can withstand severe frost.

The Delosperma ashtonii belongs to the Aizoaceae family. It is a small South African perennial plant native to Natal and Lesotho, with excellent hardiness in well-drained soil (-15°C). This delosperma, or perennial purslane, has a tuberous caudex, which is a fleshy stump that serves as its storage organ. It develops creeping, branched, prostrate stems. These stems bear a multitude of small, fleshy, triangular leaves, light green and soft, covered in tiny hairs. They are sessile, in other words, without a petiole and directly inserted into the stems. Together, they form a very low carpet (5 to 7 cm), evergreen in winter, which blooms abundantly from June to October. The flowers display a bright pink colour around a white centre. A flowering that brings very vivid colours to the most deprived areas of the garden. The flowers only open in the sun.

The Delosperma ashtonii is an ideal rockery plant, but it is also an excellent variety for hanging baskets and flower pots. It will thrive in slightly arid areas of the garden, sometimes difficult to landscape: a dry and rocky slope, a dry stone wall, between the stones of a sun-drenched rockery... Sedums, dwarf carnations, wall bellflowers, and creeping gypsophila will be good companions for this exotic-looking carpet, just like the Valerians (Centranthus), with which it shares the same needs: sun and dry soil, both in winter and summer.

Planting and care

The Delosperma ashtonii should preferably be planted in spring (or in autumn in mild and dry climates) in a very well-drained, light, poor, dry, even rocky or sandy soil. It appreciates walls, rockeries, and well-exposed slopes. If your region experiences frosts below -15 °C, it is best to plant it in a pot or container. This way, you can protect it during winter if necessary.

A sunny and warm location is essential for it to feel comfortable and bloom abundantly. You can remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms.

Make sure it doesn't get covered in dead leaves from nearby trees if they are likely to rot. Similarly, it does not appreciate having its roots in stagnant water.
