Very beautiful and vigorous rootstock, now it just needs to establish its roots, but in my opinion, it will do so easily.

Value-for-money
A creation by Richard Cayeux introduced in 2023, with a singular and almost theatrical appearance, ideal for composing strong garden scenes. Its elegant and branching habit showcases moderately large, ruffled flowers in a unique colour blend of lavender, light chartreuse and satin aubergine. This hardy and vigorous perennial thrives in well-drained soil exposed to full sun. It works equally well in borders or large containers. Like all bearded irises, it dislikes excessive moisture around the rhizome, particularly during winter.

Description

Iris ‘Conspiration’ is an intriguing variety of tall bearded iris with enigmatic charm. It stands out for its flowers with white-mauve petals and satin aubergine-coloured sepals. The yellow-orange beards with light lavender tips add a refined touch to this ruffled and well-proportioned ensemble. Cold and drought-resistant once established, it is easily grown in full sun, in well-drained soil.

German Iris ‘Conspiration’ is a cultivar of Tall Bearded Iris belonging to the Iridaceae family. It was developed by Richard Cayeux and introduced in 2023. This cultivar is distinguished by its moderately large and ruffled flowers, with white-lavender petals broadly infused with light chartreuse green, and nearly horizontal sepals of satin aubergine colour with a fine amethyst edge. The beards are yellow-orange with light lavender tips. The plant has an upright and branching habit, reaching about 75 cm in height in the ground. Its growth is vigorous, forming dense clumps thanks to its fleshy rhizomes that spread horizontally. In pots, the dimensions may be slightly reduced, but the plant retains its elegant appearance. The foliage consists of sword-shaped, blue-green, deciduous leaves measuring up to 60 cm long. The flowering stems are sturdy, cylindrical, and slightly branching. The root system of fleshy rhizomes ensures both propagation and storage of reserves. It flowers early to mid-season, typically in May.

In a garden designed as a pictorial composition, Iris ‘Conspiration’ plays the role of a stroke of mystery, subtly placed in a spring scene. Its palette of acid greens, aubergine, and lavender calls for contrasting and nuanced companions: Euphorbias with golden foliage, blue Camassias, or the upright and dark ‘Caradonna’ sage. It also makes a sophisticated container where the morning light makes its satin reflections shimmer. The vegetable garden can have a few clumps or borders of irises grown for cut flowers.

Planting and care

Do you have a sunny spot, sheltered from the wind, warm and rather dry in summer?
This is the ideal location for planting tall irises such as 'Conspiration'! They are hardy so do not require winter protection. Well-drained soil is perfect, even if it is rather dry. Iris germanica require alkaline soil: amend your soil with lime if it tends to be acidic. Overly wet soil encourages rhizome rot. Plant from July to September to give the rhizomes enough time to grow sufficiently before lifting, then to develop new roots before winter. Plant immediately after purchase for the best results. Plan to divide irises every 4 years or so to give them fresh soil. They have vigorous growth and require space to develop and flower well. Plant with spacing suited to the size and vigour of the variety: approximately 34-50 cm for tall varieties (5 to 10 young plants per square metre). In a monochrome planting, the rhizomes are arranged in a staggered pattern. For a mix of colours, it is advisable for the overall aesthetics of the iris bed to plant them in groups of several plants of the same variety. Always consider the direction of the rhizome's growth by arranging them in a star shape, with buds and leaves facing outward, and spacing them well away from other varieties to allow room for development.

Planting

Dig a hole wide and deep enough. Create a large conical mound of soil in the hole, on which the rhizome and spreading roots are placed. Cover the roots. It is important that the rhizome remains slightly exposed at the soil surface. It should not be planted in a depression (risk of rot), so account for soil settling and the iris sinking. In clay or damp soil, the rhizome should even be elevated on a small mound a few centimetres high. To help the soil cling to the roots, lightly firm the soil and water generously immediately after planting. Water as needed 2-3 times until established.

Maintenance:

Keep the soil free of weeds by shallow hoeing, taking care not to damage the rhizomes or roots. Weeds shade the irises, retain moisture (leading to rot) and attract slugs. Similarly, remove dry leaves. If they are diseased (reddish-edged spots from heterosporiosis), burn them. Deadhead spent flowers.
