Description

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Pixio’ is a small, charming paniculate hydrangea with a dense, regular habit, as well as abundant flowering with changing colours. Its conical panicles turn from creamy white to lime green before taking on a pink tinge towards autumn. Perfectly suited to small spaces, ‘Pixio’ adds character to a terrace or a border. Hardy and undemanding, it withstands cold climates and adapts to any well-drained soil, but not too dry in summer.

Hydrangea ‘Pixio’ belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family and bears the code name ‘GRHP11’ PBR; it is a protected variety introduced by the breeder Guido Rouwette in the Netherlands. Like some other compact cultivars, it has colourful flowering that forms on the current year's wood. This small shrub is bushy and very branched, with exceptional density for a paniculata. Its growth is moderate: it generally reaches its adult size in 2 to 3 years, i.e. 60 to 80 cm in height and width when planted in the ground. The flowers appear as conical, 10 to 20 cm long panicles composed of sterile florets that are creamy white to lime green, gradually turning pink in autumn; the fertile flowers are much smaller and lightly scented, attracting pollinators and foragers. The flowering stems are robust and easily support the numerous inflorescences. The foliage is deciduous, consisting of simple, opposite, elliptical-ovate leaves with toothed margins, measuring 7 to 15 cm long and 3 to 6 cm wide. They are dark green in season, then turn yellow in autumn before falling.

Hydrangea ‘Pixio’ slips into a shrub border, a large border, a small flowering hedge or a large pot on the terrace. It provides an anchor point to structure flowering displays without weighing them down. It can be associated with other compact panicle hydrangeas such as 'Bobo' and 'Mojito', with the large Nepeta 'Six Hills Giant', with lady fern or even with hardy geraniums in pastel shades. By playing with volumes and textures, you create dynamic displays that evolve through the seasons, in a contemporary and romantic spirit.

Planting and care

Plant your Hydrangea paniculata Pixio in deeply worked soil. A good base fertiliser (horn meal or dried blood) will encourage the establishment of your plant and feed it without risk of burning. Hydrangea paniculata prefers humus-bearing soils, but tolerates slightly lime-rich soils. If your soil tends to be dry, mix plenty of compost with the soil when filling in the planting hole and create a watering basin on the surface. Apply a mulch in summer to maintain soil moisture. Spring growth is quite late. Water frequently during flowering, without watering the foliage and flowers directly.
