More information

A compact and bushy shrub, prized for its bright red, perpetual flowering. It flowers abundantly in spring (April-May) with large semi-double flowers measuring 8 cm in diameter, then reflowers in waves during summer and autumn. It forms a dense and elegant bush, ideal for semi-shaded or sunny areas in cool climates. It prefers acidic, moist, well-drained soils, enriched with ericaceous soil, and requires regular watering to keep the soil slightly moist.

Description

Rhododendron Repetita® Red is a remarkable hybrid Azalea, known for its cherry-red flowers and its ability to rebloom several times a year, from spring to autumn. Its compact, dense, and naturally rounded habit makes it an ideal plant for lightly shaded borders, woodland settings, or decorative pots on terraces. This hardy azalea, tolerant down to -20°C, thrives in acidic, rich, and well-drained soils kept slightly moist, especially in dry climates or when grown in pots. It dislikes scorching exposures and chalky soils, preferring filtered light or gentle sun.

Rhododendron Repetita® Red is an evergreen Azalea, also known as Rhododendron 'RLH1-1P2'. It is a horticultural cultivar belonging to the Ericaceae family. This cultivar was developed in the United States by horticulturists Robert and Lisa Head and results from complex hybridisations aimed at achieving prolonged flowering, between the japonica and indica species. It was selected for its rare ability to rebloom multiple times a year. It stands out for its compact and rounded habit, forming a dense and bushy shrub. Its growth is moderate, reaching approximately 50 to 70 cm in height and width after 10 years of cultivation in open ground. In pots, its dimensions are slightly smaller, varying according to growing conditions. The semi-double, between 7 and 8.5 cm in diameter, flowers are a vibrant red with purple undertones. They appear abundantly in spring (April-May), with sporadic reblooming in summer and a more pronounced flowering in autumn, lasting until the first frosts. Flowering is primarily apical, meaning it occurs at the tips of the stems. The flowers are sterile, producing no fruit or seeds. The foliage is semi-evergreen to evergreen, composed of dark green, narrow, and slightly glossy leaves, measuring 3 to 5 cm long. The stems are thin, flexible, and brownish, with smooth bark. The root system is shallow, fibrous, and spreading, making the plant sensitive to prolonged droughts and poorly drained soils.

The Repetita® Red Azalea imposes its warm and vibrant colour with a controlled intensity. Its red, almost theatrical flowering finds a refined echo alongside the bluish foliage of a Fothergilla ‘Blue Shadow’, the velvety textures of a Heuchera ‘Obsidian’, or the purple tips of a Japanese maple ‘Bloodgood’. In a pot, it becomes a jewel on a shaded terrace, framed by light ornamental grasses like Carex oshimensis ‘Everest’.

Planting and care

Rhododendron Repetita Red hybrid Azalea tolerates sun (non-scorching) well, but its preferred exposure is partial shade, particularly in hot and very sunny regions. Plant it in ericaceous soil, or humus-bearing and well-drained soil, but above all, non-calcareous. When planting, don't bury the rootball too deeply; it should be level with the soil. Water abundantly during dry periods, at least once a week during the first year, using non-calcareous water. In spring, apply fertiliser for ericaceous plants. After the first flowering, you can prune lightly to maintain a neat plant, but this is not essential. Remove faded flowers to encourage the emergence of new shoots. Azalea has few diseases when well-established outdoors. It may be attacked by vine weevils, which eat the edges of leaves and rootlets, or the notorious 'rhododendron leafhopper', which rarely causes significant damage. If the soil is calcareous or poorly drained, or the young plant is planted too deeply, the leaves may yellow and the plant will eventually perish. Finally, Japanese azaleas do not like dry indoor conditions.
