Description
Weigela florida Colourtwist® Twopink is a cultivar selected for its floribundus nature, hardiness, and large two-tone pink flowers. This medium-sized, deciduous, easygoing shrub can be used in beds, in a small flowering hedge, and even in pots on the terrace. Its naturally rounded habit, healthy foliage, and good cold resistance make it suitable for many gardens.
Belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family, this weigela descends from the botanical species Weigela florida, native to East Asia (north and east China, Korea, south of Russian Primorye, and Kyushu in Japan). Twopink is protected under the denomination ‘VUKOZ90345’ and marketed in Europe in the Colourtwist® series. It is a selection made in the Czech Republic; it is also found in North America in the Czechmark® series. It was obtained by Vojtěch Benetka (Průhonice, CZ) from a cross-breeding carried out in 1990, identified in 1994, and then commercialised.
The young plant adopts a bushy, rounded, slightly upright, well-branched habit. With medium growth, it reaches between 1.50 m and 1.70 m in height and 1.20 m to 1.30 m in width; in a pot, the bush will stay between 0.80 m and 1.20 m, depending on the container volume. The deciduous leaves are opposite on the stems, ovate to oblong, and measure on average 5 to 7 cm long by 2 to 3 cm wide. Their margin is finely toothed, their slightly hairy upper surface is a medium glossy green and their underside is lighter; the veins are well marked. The main flowering occurs in May-June on the previous year's wood; the small clusters or corymbs comprise several tubular flowers with 5 lobes of 2 to 3 cm, light pink with a carmine pink throat and tube; a very light sweet scent can be perceived nearby. Well-established specimens can reflower lightly during the summer if pruned appropriately.
This Twopink variety proves hardy down to approximately -25°C, it adapts to ordinary, slightly clayey but well-drained soils, and flowers more abundantly in full sun. Use this bush as the centrepiece of a bed or in a small informal hedge. In a pot, choose a container at least 40 cm on each side. Pair it with white or purple spring flowerings to highlight its pink tones: Deutzia ‘Yuki Snowflake’ and Syringa meyeri ‘Palibin’ for example. Beside it, you can plant blue perennials like Nepeta Kit Cat or Geranium Rozanne. Purple physocarpus will showcase its flowering.

Planting and care
Preferably plant Weigela Colourtwist Twopink in autumn (or in spring in cold climates) in full sun, in ordinary, deeply loosened and well-drained soil; improve heavy soils with coarse sand and mature compost. Dig a hole twice the volume of the root ball, water at planting and then keep the soil moist for the first two summers; a 5 to 7 cm layer of mulch limits evaporation and weeds.
To grow in a pot, choose a container 40 to 50 cm with a drainage layer and a mix of potting soil, garden soil, and compost (50/30/20); water regularly in summer without letting water stagnate under the pot and protect the root ball from prolonged frost. Add a bucket of compost to the base each spring; a shrub fertiliser after flowering supports reblooming, avoid excess nitrogen which promotes foliage at the expense of flowers.
Weigela tolerates lime somewhat, but not waterlogging: in case of chlorosis, lighten the soil and add iron chelate. Vigorous and not very susceptible to diseases, it can attract aphids and vine weevils.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
