Description

Dedicated to a young child, Narcissus 'Janis Babson' possesses the elegance and innocence of spring bulbs. It boasts a magnificent pure white corolla with a delicately undulating salmon-pink cup in the centre. This narcissus is an excellent companion for the arrival of spring, both in the garden and in bouquets.

Narcissus are perennial and very hardy, so you can count on them to return year after year without any problems. Plant them wherever you like, whether it's in lawns, rockeries, flower beds, or even in planters and pots.

Narcissus is toxic, so it's advisable to wash your hands after picking or handling them. The flower does not tolerate rain well.

For a little background, according to Greek mythology, Narcissus was a young man condemned by the gods to only love himself. When he saw his reflection in a fountain, he became entranced by his own image and ended up drowning. He then transformed into a flower.

Planting and care

Place Narcissus 'Janis Babson' bulbs in full sun or partial shade. Very easy to grow, they can tolerate both the shade of woodland and a sunny flower bed. They prefer moist but well-drained soils. Plant them in autumn, at a depth of 15cm (6in) and spaced 10cm (4in) apart. Group them in clusters of at least 5 bulbs, in patches of uniform colour or mixed.

You can plant them in lawns. In this case, lift the turf, dig and loosen the soil to a depth of at least 20cm (8in) (the length of a spade). Plant your bulbs, cover with soil and replace the turf. Choose a spot where you won't mow, as the daffodil leaves must wither before cutting them. The bulb uses the leaves to rebuild itself and prepare the flowers for the following year. However, remember to cut the flowers as soon as they fade to avoid seed formation. This would unnecessarily exhaust the bulb.

Cut the leaves when they have turned yellow and apply fertiliser at that time, not before. Maintain regular watering during the growing season and then let the soil dry out once the foliage is mature.
