Description

The 'Steptoe' Narcissus is a single narcissus with a large crown. The large flowers, 10cm (4in) in diameter, emerge in April. They are composed of 6 outer petals, white, surrounding a large white crown with a yellow heart.

The flowers are carried by sturdy stems, reaching a height of 45cm (18in) at maturity. They are accompanied by deciduous foliage. The 'Steptoe' narcissus is a vigorous plant. Plant it in groups for a more impressive display. It pairs well with other spring bulbs as well as perennials, annuals, and flowering shrubs. Narcissus flowers are increasingly appreciated today because they are a symbol of spring.

Very easy to grow, they tolerate both the shade of a woodland and a sunny flower bed. They can also be cultivated in pots. You can cut the flowers to put them in a vase, they last well. The narcissus is one of the hardiest bulbs among autumn plantings. It is a faithful plant that returns every year.

Its name comes from a Greek legend in which a handsome young man rejected the love of the nymph Echo. As punishment, the gods made him love only his own image. Leaning over a fountain to drink, Narcissus saw his reflection and remained in contemplation before drowning. He then transformed into a flower.

Planting and care

Easy to cultivate, the 'Steptoe' Narcissus thrives in the sun and partial shade. It tolerates drought. All Narcissi are toxic. N 'Steptoe' does not withstand inclement weather such as rain that damages the flower. Apart from that, it is one of the most resilient bulbs. Plant the bulbs in autumn in a light, fairly fertile, and well-drained soil. Keep the soil moist during the growing period. Provide a depth at least one and a half times their height, slightly deeper in light soil or in a short grass meadow. After flowering, let the leaves dry, the bulbs will enter a dormant state until the next winter. Trim the faded flowers to prevent the formation of seeds that would unnecessarily exhaust the bulb.
