The astonishing Tulipa 'Exquisit' seems to come from another world. Carried by a sturdy stem, the flower bursts open in May, resembling a small tender green artichoke. The green petals spread out on a layer of white-ivory petals tinged with green. From the heart of this corolla emerges a dome composed of a multitude of small silky petals of intense violet, intertwined with each other. Magnificent, exotic, and rare in cultivation, this tulip will delight enthusiasts of truly unique plants. This extraordinary tulip brings something new to bouquets, just like its bluish 'Blue Wow' sisters, and the white and red 'Ice Cream'.
Â
Tulipa 'Exquisit' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it was introduced in 2013. It is currently classified in the group of 'late doubles', although the particular structure of its flower almost deserves a specific horticultural category to be created. This compact tulip will reach 35 to 40cm (14 to 16in) in height when flowering. Flowering takes place in May, a little later than that of other tulips. The flowers, 8 to 10cm (3 to 4in) wide, are strangely constituted, probably the result of a very rare mutation. The intense violet-purple colour of its petals further accentuates the unique aspect of its personality. The flowers last a long time in a vase or in the garden and extend the tulip season until May.
Â
With varied, tender, or vibrant colours, and opulent and naive flowers, late double tulips bring fantasy and romance to pots and sunny gardens, in the company of the most beautiful spring blooms. 'Exquisit' pairs well with pastel tulips like 'Angelique', 'Creme Up Star', and 'Maureen Double', or dark ones like 'Queen of the Night'. When designing your flower beds, you must consider the height and flowering period of the tulips, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant extra bulbs for bouquets, as they make superb cut flowers that last a long time in a vase. The fragrant flowers of 'Orange Angelique' will give the greatest satisfaction in a vase, for example. 'Exquisit' looks wonderful in a bed of lady's mantle. It is enhanced by small delicate flowers like chamomiles or forget-me-nots. In a large bouquet, it pairs well with pastel varieties, such as 'Françoise', 'La Belle Epoque', and 'Greenstar'.
Sold in sets of 10 and 30 bulbs.

Botanical data
Ideally, plant the bulbs in a sunny location, from October to December for beautiful spring flowering. You can also place them in a partially shaded area. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in light, fertile, and well-drained soil that has been deeply loosened. Plant them at a depth of 15cm (6in) (the bulbs should be covered with twice their height in soil). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart (making sure they do not touch each other) to create a mass effect. Cut the flower stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
