Description
The Amaryllis 'Christmas Gift', named Hippeastrum (Galaxy Group) 'Christmas Gift' by botanists, stands out with its very large pure white flowers with a green throat. Their slightly undulating petals open wide at the top of thick, perfectly straight stems. This variety flowers in the heart of winter, at a time of year when flowering plants are scarce indoors. Easy to grow in a pot, it decorates a table, a sideboard, or a windowsill. Its classic look suits both traditional Christmas decorations and contemporary interiors.
Sold under the name amaryllis, this plant actually belongs to the genus Hippeastrum and the Amaryllidaceae family. True Amaryllis form a different botanical genus, native to southern Africa. Hippeastrum species are derived from tropical and subtropical species of the American continent. 'Christmas Gift' belongs to the Galaxy Group, which brings together hybrids selected for their large, wide-open flowers. It is a bulbous perennial plant, but its sensitivity to cold means it must be grown indoors in our climates. Its large bulb, protected by brown tunics, contains the reserves needed for the initial development of the stems and flowers. After planting, one or two flower stems, hollow and leafless, emerge from the bulb. They reach 45 to 50 cm in height and each bears two to four flowers gathered at the top. The flowers measure 16 to 18 cm in diameter. Each is made up of six floral parts, called tepals, as the petals and sepals here look the same. The flowers do not all open at once, allowing the pot to remain in bloom for several weeks. The long green leaves, smooth and ribbon-like, appear during or after flowering. Their role is to replenish the bulb's reserves, and they should be kept until they naturally yellow. Flowering occurs six to eight weeks after potting in a room kept at around 18 to 20 °C. A higher temperature speeds up growth but can produce longer, less sturdy stems. As soon as the first flowers open, it is advisable to move the pot to a bright, cooler room.
The Amaryllis 'Christmas Gift' is grown indoors, placed on a table, a console, or furniture near a bright window. Its white colouring will be enhanced in a dark red, fir green, gold, or natural ceramic cachepot. For a fuller winter display, it can be paired with the Amaryllis 'Red Lion', with its deep red blooms, a pot of Paperwhite narcissus, white and highly fragrant, a Persian cyclamen in red or deep pink, or the Epipremnum aureum 'Marble Queen', which offers elegant green leaves marbled with cream. All these plants flower in winter in a bright, cool room. You can cut a stem when the first bud begins to open, then place it in a tall, stable vase.

Planting and care
The Amaryllis 'Christmas Gift' can be planted from October to February in a heavy pot, pierced at the bottom and only slightly wider than the bulb. Use a houseplant potting compost mixed with a little coarse sand or perlite. Position the bulb so that its upper third protrudes from the growing medium. Water lightly after planting, then wait for the flower stem to appear before gradually increasing the water supply. Place the pot in a bright room at 18 or 20 °C, away from a radiator. Turn it regularly so that the stem grows straight. Water when the surface of the compost has dried out and empty the saucer. After flowering, remove the faded flowers, then prune the stem to 5 or 10 cm from the bulb. Keep all the green leaves, water regularly and apply a balanced liquid fertiliser, at a low dose, every fortnight. At the end of summer, space out and then stop watering. Leave the bulb dry for eight to ten weeks before resuming its cultivation.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
