Description

The 'Belfort' Dentate Tulip is a recent variety almost impossible to find in the horticultural market. Its flowers have rounded shapes and are composed of a double row of deep red-purple petals, adorned with finely fringed edges. A sumptuous colour, forming a perfect combination with golden-yellow varieties like 'Golden Gate', for example. Both bloom in April-May on sturdy stems of impressive height.

The 'Belfort' Dentate Tulip belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, very recent, it is classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is the finely dentate tips of the petals. This tulip, with a beautiful stature and a sturdy stem resistant to bad weather, reaches 50-60cm in height when in bloom. The flowering takes place in April-May, a bit later than other tulips. The flowers are double, with slightly closed cups, their centre tightly packed in green-tinted petals on the outside. They bloom in a whirlwind of richly coloured deep red-purple mixed with mauve reflections. The fringed edges of this elegant tulip give the illusion that the flower is sprinkled with sugar or covered in frost. The flowers last a long time and allow the tulip season to be extended until May.

In the world of flowers, there are few plants that can rival dentate tulips, both original and elegant, but also resistant to heat and bad weather. Ideal in flower beds with white varieties ('Snow Crystal'), candy pink ('Santander'), or even purple ('Cuban Night'), the 'Belfort' Tulip will also create beautiful spots in perennial flower beds, alongside biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose wallflowers, forget-me-nots, or dame's rocket for this purpose. Very dark Heucheras, like the 'Blackout' or 'Obsidian' cultivars, enhance all pastel or vibrant colours, as do blue perennial geraniums ('Rozanne', 'Johnson's Blue', 'Orion'). By choosing dentate tulips, you will also add a unique touch to your bouquets.

Planting and care

Place the dentate tulip 'Belfort' preferably in a sunny location from September to December for a beautiful spring flowering. You can also place it in a partially shaded area. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in a light, fertile, and well-drained soil, and loosen the soil to a depth of 15cm (6in) (bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart, making sure they do not touch each other to create a mass effect that will give a more decorative appearance. Cut the flowering stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.
