Description

Tulipa Viridiflora 'Nightrider' is a recent creation, with flowers of unexpected elegance, that will delight gardeners in search of originality. This variety has a happy but unusual combination of nuanced violet petals with a touch of pink and green flames. Its dishevelled flowers, with tormented petals, can last up to three weeks, and create a superb mass effect, at the end of the tulip season. For a late variety, it persists quite well in the garden. Excellent as a cut flower.

Tulipa 'Nightrider' belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 8, which is presently the least significant group, closely related to late single tulips. Their main characteristics are to bloom late in the season, and to have flowers streaked or flamed with green. The 'Nightrider' variety will reach 30 to 35 cm (12 to 14in) high when in flower. Perched on sturdy stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the large cup-shaped flowers are 10 to 13 cm (4 to 5in) wide and consist of six slightly irregular and variegated petals randomly tinged with violet pink around a distinctly green central zone. Flowering takes place at the end of May or in June, the end of the tulip season.

Viridiflora tulip 'Nightrider' can be accompanied by biennials and perennials, or planted in small patches in a rockery. You can associate it with daisies or pink pansies. It is a charming addition to your flowerbeds, as it will harmonise with a whole range of colours, without being garish, and without overshadowing its neighbours.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add manure or poorly decomposed compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. 'Nightrider' will grow well in soil which is moist to dry in summer, in a sunny or partially shaded position. Once flowering is finished, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.
