Description

The Arctic King Lettuce is an exceptionally cold-resistant Butter Lettuce. It produces generous heads of light green leaves of very good taste. It is an ideal variety for late autumn and winter crops. Sowing from August to October for a harvest from March to May.

If Lettuce is one of the most popular vegetables (4.2 kilograms per person per year), it is equally appreciated for its freshness, crunchiness, as well as its taste and nutritional qualities. It can be consumed raw in salads but also cooked, to accompany peas, for example.

Lettuce is the ultimate leaf vegetable, an annual plant belonging to the large family of Asteraceae. Its Latin name, Lactuca sativa, refers both to the white sap (lactuca) that flows when it is cut and to the fact that it is cultivated (sativa).

It is an essential vegetable in any self-respecting vegetable garden, and there are so many varieties that it can be grown almost all year round.

Growing Lettuce is easy as long as you respect the cultivation calendar for each variety. Its growth is fast, and it thrives in any soil, as long as it is rich and remains moist.

Harvest: It is simply done with a knife when the Lettuces are well developed.

Storage: Lettuce can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator, but to enjoy its freshness to the fullest, we recommend consuming it shortly after harvesting. Freezing cooked Lettuce is entirely possible.

The gardener's little trick: A real nightmare for gardeners, slugs and snails love lettuce leaves. When the hunt is on, it must be admitted that we are ready to do anything to repel or eliminate them: the ash cord (which will be quickly leached by the rain), the homemade trap filled with beer (which hedgehogs get drunk on until they are in an alcoholic coma), the copper strips supposed to electrocute them (which tickle them a little).

Instead of wasting your time and, incidentally, your salads, we recommend using an anti-slug product composed of ferric phosphate known as Ferramol. Unlike metaldehyde-based slug killers, which are dangerous for wildlife and polluting, Ferramol is natural, non-toxic, and very effective as long as you remember to "treat" your plot a few days before sowing.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Germination occurs at a temperature of around 16°C (60.8°F) and takes an average of 10 days.

Sowing is done in the sun or partial shade, in moist, fertile and well-prepared soil.

Directly in open ground during summer or under cover (cold greenhouse, Nantes tunnel, frame) from autumn to the end of spring. Make furrows one centimetre deep, spaced 35 cm (14in) apart, and sow in rows by placing one seed every 3-4 centimetres (1-2 inches). When the plants are large enough to handle, thin them out, keeping only one plant every 10 cm (4in) for harvesting as "young shoots" or every 30 cm (12in) for mature harvest.

In order to have these lettuces throughout the year or almost, remember to spread out your sowings over time.

Cultivation:

Lettuce is not a very demanding vegetable but it still requires humus-rich soil, otherwise it tends to bolt prematurely. It is advisable, preferably in autumn, to apply a moderate amount of mature compost by raking it to a depth of 5 cm (2in), after having, as with any vegetable cultivation, thoroughly loosened the soil. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH between 5.5 and 7.5).

During cultivation, remember that lettuce prefers moist soil and remember to water regularly.

Lettuce is a good companion, it is a crop that can easily be interplanted with slower-growing vegetables such as beans, tomatoes, cucumbers. Just avoid planting it next to corn.
