The seeds yielded well, but there was little diversity in the varieties and no red leaves as shown.

Description

The Sweet Mesclun (without Rocket) is a colourful mix with mild flavours, represented by the Blonde Oak Leaf Lettuce, the Red Salad Bowl, the Frisée Endive, the Escarole... Perfect for creating beautiful summer salads! Sow from January to July for a harvest from April to October.

Mesclun, from the Provençal word "mesclum" meaning mixture, is a salad composed of different varieties, at least five for purists, such as Lettuce, Rocket, Lamb's Lettuce... Highly appreciated for its wide range of tastes, this little salad is generally harvested as a "young plant" and can be consumed raw or even cooked throughout the year.

Busy gardeners will appreciate these seed mixes as much as gourmets, as they allow for a variety of flavours with minimal effort and a single sowing.

These salads are called "cut and come again" as they usually have the ability to regrow after harvest, as long as the base of the plant is not completely cut off.

Growing these mixes is easy and space-saving, they can usually be grown in a planter on a balcony or in restricted spaces such as square foot gardens.

Harvest: these salad mixes can be harvested as needed, either when they are still young or when they reach maturity. Harvesting is done with a knife, by taking the outer leaves of the plant.

Storage: Mesclun can be stored for a few days in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator, but ideally, it should be consumed freshly picked to enjoy its full freshness.

Gardener's tip: Flea beetles, tiny beetles, are fond of Rocket leaves which are often part of Mesclun. They meticulously puncture the leaves during dry and hot weather. While spraying Tansy infusion can limit the damage, the installation of an insect-proof netting from sowing is the most effective method of control, while avoiding the use of insecticides which, even of natural origin, have consequences on the balance of the garden.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Germination occurs at a temperature of about 16° and takes an average of 10 days.

Sowing is done from January to July in full sun or partial shade, in moist, fertile and well-prepared soil.

Directly in open ground during the summer or under cover (cold greenhouse, Nantes tunnel, frame) from autumn to the end of spring, trace furrows one centimetre deep, spaced 35cm (14in) apart and sow in rows by placing a seed every 3-4 centimetres (1-2 inches). When the plants are large enough to handle, thin them out by keeping only one plant every 10cm (4in) for a "young plant" harvest or every 30cm (12in) for a ripe harvest.

Cultivating this mix is perfectly possible in a pot or in small spaces like square vegetable gardens, then sow by broadcasting and thin out by keeping only one plant every 10cm (4in).

In order to have these salads throughout the year or almost, remember to spread out your sowings over time.

Cultivation:

These small salads are not very demanding but still require humus-rich soil. It is advisable, preferably in autumn, to apply a moderate amount of mature compost by raking it in to a depth of 5cm (2in), after having, as with any vegetable crop, thoroughly loosened the soil.
