Description

The Tantan Romaine Lettuce is a variety that produces beautiful small tight heads with green, crunchy and sweet leaves. It is both tasty and resistant to diseases and running to seed. This lettuce can be sown from February to August for a harvest 8 to 10 weeks later.

If Lettuce is one of the most popular vegetables (4.2 kilos per person per year), it is as much for its freshness, crunchiness as for its taste and nutritional qualities. It can be eaten raw in salads but also cooked, to accompany peas for example.

As the ultimate leafy vegetable, Lettuce is an annual plant that belongs to the large Asteraceae family. Its Latin name, Lactuca sativa, refers both to the white sap (lactuca) that flows when it is cut and to the fact that it is cultivated (sativa).

It is an essential vegetable in any respectable vegetable garden and there are so many varieties that it can be grown almost all year round.

Growing Lettuce is easy as long as you respect the cultivation calendar for each variety. It grows quickly and thrives in any soil, as long as it is rich and remains moist.

Harvest: It is simply done with a knife, when the Lettuces are well developed.

Storage: Lettuce can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator, but to enjoy its freshness to the maximum, we recommend consuming it immediately after harvesting. Freezing cooked Lettuce is also possible.

Gardener's tip: The bane of gardeners, slugs and snails love lettuce leaves. When the hunt is on, we are ready to do anything to repel or eliminate them: ash cord (which will quickly be leached by rain), homemade traps filled with beer (which intoxicate hedgehogs to the point of ethylic coma), copper bands supposed to electrocute them (which tickle them a little)...

Instead of wasting your time and, incidentally, your salads, we recommend using an anti-slug product composed of ferric phosphate known as Ferramol. Unlike metaldehyde-based slug killers, which are dangerous for wildlife and polluting, Ferramol is natural, non-toxic and very effective as long as you remember to "treat" your plot a few days before sowing.

Organic or "AB" seeds come from plants grown without phytosanitary products (insecticides, herbicides). These seeds also do not undergo any treatment after harvest. They bear the AB label and are certified by Ecocert, an independent organization.

Planting and care

Sowing:

The germination of Lettuce occurs at a temperature of around 18°C (64.4°F) and takes an average of 10 days.

Sowing can be done from February to August for a harvest 8 to 10 weeks later.

Organic seeds, or "AB" seeds, come from plants grown without phytosanitary products (insecticides, herbicides). These seeds also do not undergo any treatment after harvest. They carry the AB label and are certified by Ecocert, an independent organization.

On well-prepared and loosened soil, make furrows spaced 25 cm (10in) apart, with a depth of 0.5 cm (0in). Sow in rows, spacing the seeds 4 cm (2in) apart and cover them. After germination, when the plants are well developed, thin them out, leaving one plant every 30 cm (12in).

If your vegetable garden is often attacked by slugs and snails, we recommend sowing your seeds under cover, in small pots, and then transplanting the well-developed plants to the garden.

Cultivation:

Lettuce is not a very demanding vegetable, but it does require humus-rich soil, otherwise it tends to bolt prematurely. It is advisable to apply a moderate amount of mature compost in autumn, by lightly scratching the soil to a depth of 5 cm (2in), after loosening it as you would for any vegetable cultivation. Lettuce prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH between 5.5 and 7.5).

During cultivation, remember that Lettuce appreciates moist soil and remember to water it regularly.

Lettuce is a good companion plant and can easily be intercropped with slower-growing vegetables such as beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. Just avoid planting it next to corn.
