Description

The Butternut Cobnut F1 Walnut is an easy variety to grow. It produces oblong and uniform fruits weighing up to 1.5 kg. It has good precocity and rapid growth. It keeps very well. Sowing is done under shelter in April and May, then in open ground in May and June. Harvesting takes place from August to November.

Musquee de Provence squash, Butternut, Sucrine du Berry, etc. belong to the Cucurbitaceae family, of the genus Cucurbita moschata. This annual herbaceous plant has long, vigorous, trailing or climbing stems with strong tendrils. Each plant has separate male and female flowers, making it monoecious. It is the female flowers that will produce the fruits once fertilized by the pollen from the male flowers.
The fruits are usually elongated in shape, with a club-shaped or sometimes spherical, flatter or ribbed end. Their colour is also very variable: dark green, orange, cream, etc. When ripe, they are covered in a characteristic dust. The peduncle has five well-marked ridges and widens as it spreads at the point of attachment to the fruit. The flesh is thick and rather dark in color, ranging from red to orange.

Harvesting and storage

Harvest the squash as late as possible, without risking the first frosts. Keep the peduncle as large as possible and store them in a temperate room (10 to 15°C (50 to 59°F)) without allowing them to touch each other. This way, you can store them for a few months to a year.

Gardening tips

You can bury the stems at the nodes to encourage rooting.
To save space and protect your fruits from rot, you can grow pumpkins on supports such as a trellis or sturdy stakes. You can also place a tile or brick, for example, between the ground and the fruit to isolate it and limit premature rotting. A thick mulch will also do the trick.

Planting and care

Preparation

Cucurbitaceae plants thrive in loose, rich, and deep soils. Dig a hole at least 40 cm (16in) in all directions and fill it with well-decomposed manure and/or compost. In addition to good fertilization, they will need plenty of water and heat, as well as ample space (at least 1 m²).

Sowing

Before sowing, you can soak the seeds for 24 hours in a little warm water to stimulate germination.

Either, 3 weeks before transplanting, under a cover or in a warm place (16 to 30°C), starting from April, sow 2 or 3 seeds per bucket or container large enough for root development. Germination will occur 3 to 5 days later. Keep only the most vigorous plant. Plant in open ground after mid-May, once all risk of frost has passed. It is important not to sow too early, as the plants could become spindly and/or their developed root system would not withstand transplantation.

Or, starting from mid-May, sow directly in place, in groups of 3 seeds, as soon as frost is no longer a concern and the soil is well warmed. Thin out after 2 to 3 weeks, keeping only the most vigorous plants. Cover the soil with organic matter (compost, clippings, leaves, etc.), which will help maintain soil moisture.

Watering

From sowing or planting, water generously, taking care not to disturb the seeds, and then regularly during fruit formation. However, once the fruits have formed, during ripening, limit watering and protect the fruits from rot by isolating them from the ground.
