Description

The 'Peento'® Peach is a self-fertile variety, resistant to cold and not very susceptible to diseases. Its red flat peaches have a creamy flesh with a honey-like taste. The fruiting, and therefore the harvest, is long: it extends throughout the month of August.

The species name "persica" was given to the peach because it was thought to originate from Persia. In reality, all cultivated forms originate from northern China. Its appearance in Europe occurred in the 6th century and experienced significant development in the 19th century. From there, numerous selections aimed at improving the fruit's taste qualities took place. The 'Peento'® Peach, Peen-too in Chinese, is the name given by J. Decaisne to flat peach varieties in 1875.

Like many fruit trees, the 'Peento'® Peach appreciates light, rich, and deep soils, and it does not tolerate excess water or heavy and compact soils well. A sunny location sheltered from the wind will help with fruiting. It is a fairly vigorous tree. Its upright habit indicates a tall tree with many branches growing vertically, giving it an elegant and slender silhouette. Its deciduous foliage is a vibrant green and emits a slight almond scent. Its leaves are long, measuring 8 to 15cm (3 to 6in) in length and 3 to 4cm (1 to 2in) in width, with short petioles. Its pale pink flowering occurs in late March. The flowers are hermaphroditic and self-fertile. The fruiting results in flat, red fruits. Their flesh is creamy with a honey-like taste. This tree does not require too much maintenance and tolerates pruning well.

Peaches can be enjoyed raw, cooked, sweet, savoury, flambéed, frozen, or poached. They pair very well with wine and certain meats, such as duck. They can be found in numerous recipes, including jams, compotes, and pastries...

Planting and care

The 'Peento'® Peach is preferably planted from October to December. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the big day, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water, in order to moisten the entire root ball through capillary action. Add compost to the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole, fill with soil mixed with potting soil. Gently tamp down around the base of the fruit tree as you fill, the roots should be in close contact with the soil. The root ball should be completely covered. Water thoroughly.

The 'Peento'® Peach has a semi-pivot root system. It will thrive in fairly deep soils. It also prefers a light and well-draining soil.

Care

Pruning instructions In the following spring after planting, a first pruning for training will be welcome. Keep only the branches that will form the tree's framework (about 5 branches). Fruits appear on one-year-old branches. The wood that has borne fruit will not reproduce. For the pruning for fruiting, cut back the branches that have already borne fruit to 2 buds above the future branching. Remove the branches in the center that intersect and shorten the longest ones that extend outward in order to maintain a harmonious silhouette.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time January to February, November to December
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
