Description

This Organic Peach Tree is a moderate-sized, self-fertile variety, with a mid-late flowering period, appreciated for its large, yellow-fleshed, tasty peaches. It produces a peach with yellow-orange skin and red markings in August. Its yellow, melting and firm, highly aromatic and sweet flesh, is prized as a table peach and in the making of pies and cakes. The Peach tree is hardy but likes warm, sunny and sheltered conditions and it is sensitive to spring frosts, late frost can lead to the destruction of future fruits. Plant in autumn or early winter.

The species name "Persica" was given to the peach tree, which was thought to originate from Persia. In fact, all cultivated forms originate from northern China. It appeared in Europe in the 6th century and experienced significant development in the 19th century. From there, numerous selections aimed at improving the fruit's taste qualities took place. The Redhaven Peach Tree is the result of a cross between Hale Haven and Kalhaven, obtained by S. Johnston at the South Haven Experimental Station in Michigan, USA. It was selected around 1940.

Like many fruit trees, the Redhaven Peach Tree appreciates light, rich and deep soils, and does not tolerate excess water or heavy and compact soils. For this variety, be cautious of cold and drought: a sunny location sheltered from the wind, and watering during prolonged drought, will help. It is a vigorous tree with a spreading habit and a tall trunk with numerous horizontal branches, giving it a very elegant silhouette. Its deciduous foliage is bright green and emits a slight almond scent. Its leaves are long, 8 to 15 cm (3 to 6in) long and 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) wide, with a short petiole.
Its semi-early pale pink blossom is in late March. The flowers are hermaphroditic and self-fertile. Besides its sensitivity to frost, its flowering can be susceptible to fungal diseases. Consider treating with Bordeaux mixture when the flower buds appear.
The fruiting is semi-late. Its yellow, aromatic and juicy fruits, weighing from 140 to 170g, can be harvested from the end of July. This tree does not require too much maintenance. It tolerates pruning well.

Peaches can be enjoyed raw, cooked, sweetened, salted, flambéed, glazed or deglazed. They pair very well with wine and certain meats, such as duck. They can be found in numerous recipes, particularly for jams, compotes, pastries,...

For transport reasons, our tallest scions may be pruned before shipping. They are suitable for all common training sizes: cordons, espaliers, goblets, half-standards and low standards, but bot high standards. If you would like more information or advice on the training of your fruit trees, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Planting and care

The Redhaven Peach is best planted from October to December. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the day, place the tree with its pot in water to moisten the entire root ball. Add compost to the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole and fill it with a mixture of soil and compost. Gently tamp around the base of the tree as you fill, ensuring that the roots are in close contact with the soil. The root ball should be completely covered. Water generously.

The Redhaven Peach has a semi-pivot root system. It will thrive in fairly deep soils. It also prefers light and well-drained soil.

Care

Pruning instructions In the following spring after planting, a training prune is a good idea. Keep only the branches that will form the tree's framework (about 5 branches). The fruit appears on one-year-old branches and wood that has borne fruit will not reproduce. For fruiting pruning, prune the branches that have already borne fruit to 2 buds above the future branching. Remove the branches in the centre that are crossing each other and shorten the longest outward-growing ones to maintain a harmonious silhouette.
