How to choose a dracaena for your home?
All our advice for your dragon tree
Contents
The Dracaena, commonly known as dragon tree, is an elegant, easy-to-care-for indoor plant, ideal for bringing a touch of greenery to a living room, office or bedroom. But with the famous Dracaena marginata, the fragrance of Dracaena ‘fragrans’ or another variety with variegated foliage, how to choose the one that will best showcase your interior? Discover our tips and the key criteria to help you choose a Dracaena.
Choosing a dragon tree by foliage colour
Foliage colour is one of the main factors to consider when choosing your Dragon tree. Foliage colour is often the first thing the eye notices and plays an important role in decorative harmony.
Solid green foliage such as that of Dracaena compacta or ‘Janet Graig’ offers a sober, elegant appearance, perfect for natural or minimalist settings. They fit easily into classic or contemporary interiors without visual overload.
Dragon trees with green foliage variegated with cream or pale yellow, such as Dracaena ‘Lemon Surprise’ or ‘Malaika’, bring extra light and contrast. Their broadly margined leaves visually brighten a slightly dark or monotonous corner of a room.
Some varieties, such as Dracaena ‘Magenta’ or ‘Bicolor’ bear green leaves with purple edges, sometimes with a cream ground depending on light. This warm-coloured foliage suits modern, bold interiors very well.

Choose a Dracaena by foliage shape and texture
Dragon tree foliage varies by variety, strongly influencing the style it brings to an interior.
Dragon trees with fine, long and stiff leaves, such as Dracaena ‘marginata’, form tall, slender silhouettes with an upright, almost graphic habit. Their airy appearance is ideal for visually lightening a slightly cluttered corner or emphasising ceiling height.
By contrast, varieties such as Dracaena ‘Hawai’ or ‘Lemon sunrise’ have broader, often glossy, arching foliage. They form a rosette around a thick stem and give the plant a softer, more tropical appearance. This type of foliage is particularly suited to warm interiors where you want to soften lines or visually fill an empty space.
And if you appreciated originality, Dracaena ‘Tornado’ stands out for its elegantly twisted leaves with a pale yellow margin.Â

Choosing a Dracaena to suit available light
One other criterion to consider is a plant’s light requirement, because not all varieties tolerate the same conditions.
Les variétés à feuillage vert uni, comme le Corn plant ‘Janet Craig’, are more tolerant of partial shade. They can tolerate moderate light, which makes them well suited to north-facing rooms or less exposed corners.
In contrast, variegated varieties, such as Dracaena ‘Lemon surprise’ or ‘Kanzi’, need more light to retain the vibrancy of their foliage. A bright light, without direct sun, suits them perfectly, by a south-facing window filtered by a sheer curtain or in a well-lit east- or west-facing room.

Habit and adult height of dragon tree also matter when choosing it or deciding its future location.
Some dragon tree varieties have a columnar shape, such as Dracaena fragrans or ‘marginata’. With age, they develop a woody trunk, often branching over time, and bear tufted foliage. They can reach 1.5 m to 2 m in height indoors, creating an indoor tree-like effect, perfect for living-room corners or entrances.
Others, more compact like Dracaena Compacta, form low rosettes, ideal for low furniture, desks or small shelves.

Choosing a Dracaena for Desired Decorative Effect
Finally, choice of your Dragon tree also depends on effect sought in the room:
Graphic dracaenas such as ‘marginata’ or ‘bicolor’ effectively structure an empty corner, add verticality and fit well into modern, minimalist or industrial interiors.
For a more natural or leafy effect, Dragon trees with soft foliage, like ‘Lemon surprise’, add an exotic touch, suiting bohemian or tropical atmospheres.
Variegated dracaenas add light in a dark or monotonous decor. Conversely, green varieties fade into the background to make way for other decorative elements, while helping to bring greenery to the space.
