Description

The Aglaonema commutatum ‘Variegata Pearls’, often sold as Aglaonema Pearls, is a houseplant with deep green foliage heavily variegated with white, particularly bright and decorative. Native to the tropical undergrowth of Asia, this variety tolerates slightly shady and humid conditions well. It fits perfectly on a shelf, a coffee table, and even on a desk corner. Its light foliage helps to brighten a room all year round.

Botanically, ‘Variegata Pearls’ is a cultivar of Aglaonema commutatum, from the Araceae family, which includes many houseplants like Monstera or philodendrons. The Aglaonema genus is native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia and New Guinea, where the plants grow in the understory, sheltered from direct sunlight, beneath the canopy. Wild strains form clumps of foliage typically variegated with green and silver.
‘Variegata Pearls’ is distinguished by its thick, ovate to lanceolate leaves, 15 to 20 cm long, of a deep green, broadly splashed with creamy white, as if they were "pearled" with light spots. The plant has a bushy habit, reaching 40 to 60 cm in height and 30 to 40 cm in width. Its growth is moderate but regular under good cultivation conditions. Like other aglaonemas, it can produce, at maturity, discreet inflorescences in the form of a spadix surrounded by a small greenish spathe, sometimes followed by red berries. However, indoors, flowering is anecdotal compared to the foliage. The foliage persists all year round, renewing itself continuously.
Please note, as with many Araceae, the sap contains calcium oxalate crystals: the plant is toxic if ingested by humans and pets.

Indoors, provide it with soft, indirect light, a stable temperature ranging between 18 and 24°C, and a light, well-draining houseplant compost. Watering should remain moderate: allow the surface of the substrate to dry out before watering again, avoiding excess water in the saucer. A medium, or even fairly high, ambient humidity suits it very well. Especially during the heating season.

The Aglaonema ‘Variegata Pearls’ pairs well with other plants with decorative foliage that enjoy the same soft, humid conditions. It can be combined with another light aglaonema like ‘Snowflake’, ‘Silver Queen’ with its silvery hues, or with the trailing Philodendron 'Brasil' and Calathea 'Yellow Fusion' with refined variegation. Placed together on a console or a bench near a window filtered by a sheer curtain, they create a pleasant little green corner all year round.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Water moderately when the top 2 to 3 cm of the substrate is dry. In winter, space out watering and avoid overwatering. Do not allow water to stagnate in the saucer. Mist the leaves regularly, especially during the heating season (when the air is drier).

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, in spring. Use a pot that is only slightly larger.
Use a mixture of houseplant compost with clay pebbles to promote drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for foliage plants (NPK 10-10-10) from March to September (spring-summer) every month, diluted in the watering water.

Houseplant care

The plant requires minimal cleaning. Occasional leaf loss may occur due to water stress or insufficient light. Wipe the leaves regularly to remove dust.
Aglaonema does not require specific pruning, but you can remove damaged or dry leaves to maintain an attractive leaf display.

Disease and pest advice

This plant shows a medium sensitivity to diseases (if maintenance is regular and appropriate). In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in 70° alcohol diluted in soapy water.
