Description

Perennial plants, valued in gardens, columbines require a light, humus-rich soil, not lacking in moisture, where they colonise the ground with their spontaneous self seeding. They can tolerate heavy soils, but do not live there for very long. Some alpine species are difficult to cultivate.

Pure yellow.

Planting and care

Plant the columbine 'Goldfinch' preferably in February–March or September–October, outside periods of frost or intense heat. It enjoys gentle sun and partial shade, especially in warm regions, where light afternoon shade is beneficial. Provide it with humus-bearing, fertile, friable and well-drained soil that remains moist in spring without becoming heavy or waterlogged in winter. An application of well-rotted compost at planting time is usually sufficient. Set the rootball without burying the collar, water thoroughly, then keep the soil slightly moist until established. Thereafter, maintenance is simple: water during dry springs, mulch if the soil dries quickly, and deadhead to limit self-seeding or keep the clump looking tidy. After flowering, cut back the spent stems; fresh, clean foliage often reappears. Avoid moving old plants, as columbines do not tolerate root disturbance.
