Description

A very graceful and easy-to-grow perennial plant with flowers in the shape of small red pompoms, suitable for borders and rock gardens.

Aquilegia vulgaris 'Ruby port' has densely double, deep red flowers. This columbine will brighten up your garden from May to July. The stiff and highly branched stems have 5 to 15 flowers at their ends. The foliage is tender green, rounded, and often divided into two or three lobes. Standing at a height of 70cm (28in), it self-seeds everywhere, occupying neglected corners.

The columbine is a very hardy perennial which thrives in partial shade or non-scorching sun, in rich and humus-bearing, moist soil.

It will blend perfectly with perennial geraniums or an old rose.

Planting and care

Aquilegia vulgaris 'Ruby Port' is very easy to grow when planted in rich and humus-bearing soil in a sunny or semi-shady location. Hardy but with a short lifespan, it tends to disappear after a few seasons but will self-seed spontaneously if you do not cut all the stems after flowering. It is quite sensitive to diseases and parasites, especially aphids and powdery mildew.
