Description

Hemerocallis Russian Ragtime is a perennial Daylily with an upright habit. It constantly renews itself from May to September. The daylily is so-named because its flowers only last for one day, but the plant produces numerous stems, each carrying at least 12 flowers. The stems are tall, upright or arching, and they are taller in this variety. The large flowers of Russian Ragtime are single. They have undulate-edged tepals that are bi-coloured, with a dark violet and lavender colour and a green centre. The tepals have pale pink veins. The flower is eye-catching and rises above the foliage.

The foliage has many semi-evergreen green leaves. They appear in early spring and last until winter. The leaves are arching and ribbon-like. The foliage forms a clump. At maturity, Hemerocallis Russian Ragtime reaches a height and spread of 60-90 cm (24-35 in). It is native to China, Korea, and Japan, and it is very hardy. It naturally grows at forest edges, in meadows, and in mountainous and marshy areas.

This ornamental plant forms a lovely ground cover with its dense vegetation. It is also suitable for perennial and shrub borders, such as along a wall. It pairs well with tulips and daffodils. Additionally, it can be placed in flower beds and mixed borders. It is a plant that can be grown in large pots. It is commonly found in American gardens. This daylily attracts hummingbirds. In winter, it enters a period of dormancy.

Planting and care

Daylilies thrive in sunny locations. Avoid dry or overly shaded conditions, as this can reduce flowering. Plant them in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Water thoroughly once or twice a week until flower buds appear, and apply liquid fertiliser every two to three weeks. Once the buds have emerged, the soil can be allowed to dry out slightly between waterings. Easy to grow, mulch the plants in November or March. Daylilies can be susceptible to rust and collar rot in high-humidity conditions, combined with temperatures over 30 °C (86 °F). In periods where there is frequent freezing and thawing, bacterial rot of stems and leaves can occur. Slugs and snails may attack the young shoots.
