Description

Hemerocallis 'Catherine Woodbury' is a particularly perpetual and fragrant flowering variety! Of medium size, it has an upright, then arching clump of medium green, slender and long leaves. From June to September, this herbaceous perennial bears very large, undulate petals in a beautiful lilac-pink colour, which harmonises wonderfully with a light yellow throat and a lime green centre. With versatile uses in the garden, plant this daylily in rich, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade.

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the family Liliaceae, closely related to the family Hemerocallidaceae. These are hardy, perennial plants with deciduous or semi-evergreen foliage. 'Catherine Woodbury', obtained in 1967 by American breeder Childs, reaches a height of 70 cm (28in), with a spread of 50 cm (20in). The flowers measure approximately 15 cm (6in) in diameter. Individually, they only last for a day, but they continuously bloom between June and September. Daylilies have short rhizomes and fleshy roots. The stems are sturdy and make beautiful bouquets. The foliage is linear and semi-evergreen. Daylilies have short rhizomes and fleshy roots and can tolerate dry soils, but they are more lush and floriferous in moist soil.

These plants are very easy to grow and thrive in both shade and sun. Some of them can be a little invasive, so don't hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn after flowering. Daylilies are often called 'the perfect perennial' due to their vibrant colours, ability to tolerate any type of environment, and their exuberance that complements other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your flower beds.  Summer bulbs can be planted alongside daylilies. 'Catherine Woodbury' will blend perfectly in a romantic garden with campanulas, penstemons, perennial flaxes, or phlox. On a balcony or patio, large pots of at least 30 cm (12in) in depth should be provided and dwarf varieties should be chosen. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Many varieties have been developed in Japan, where they are very popular. The flowers of these plants come in various colours and shapes. More than 60,000 cultivars, mostly resulting from hybridisation by gardening enthusiasts, are listed, appreciated, and studied by international Hemerocallis societies.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Catherine Woodbury' in good garden soil that is not too heavy with clay and that is enriched with humus and compost. In these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance towards summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, so there is no need to treat it and rodents are not interested in it. Daylilies thrive both in partial shade and in full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight being sufficient. Plant by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. If you plant several of them, do not space them too close together as the gaps will be quickly filled. For a few weeks after planting, it is good to keep the soil moist. Divide the clumps preferably in autumn after flowering.
