Description

The 'Apricot Angelique' Tulip, introduced in 2009, is a descendant with apricot tones of the most famous of the double varieties, the tender and pink 'Angelique'. Its peony-like flower in pastel shades charms with its soft and warm nuances, ranging from pale yellow to salmon. It is also adorned with pink, tangerine hues, and cream-white, with a redistribution of colours. Its late flowering, in May-June, is delightful in the garden as well as in bouquets, beautifully ending the tulip season.

The 'Apricot Angelique' Tulip, a sport of the 'Angelique' variety, belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, obtained in the Netherlands, it is currently classified in the group of 'Late Double Tulips', whose main characteristic is to have very double and crumpled flowers, long-lasting, carried by sturdy stems. 'Apricot Angelique' is of medium size (40-45cm (16-18in)) and its flower is of a beautiful size, very double and well bloomed.  It shows excellent holding ability. Its evolving colour palette includes apricot, pink, pale yellow, tangerine orange, complemented by white-pink and cream notes with a hint of pale green. The light fragrance adds an additional charm, and it is truly a favorite, especially when its buds slowly open in a vase, gradually shedding its petals like a rain of iridescent petals. The flowering starts relatively late, in May, when other tulips have already faded long ago.

With their varied, tender or vibrant colours, opulent and naive flowers, late double tulips bring fantasy and romance to pots or sunny gardens, alongside the most beautiful spring blooms or pastel tulips like 'Angelique', 'Creme Up Star', and 'Maureen Double', or on the contrary, dark ones like 'Queen of Night' or 'Cuban Night'. Don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flowerbeds, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for bouquets, as they last a long time in a vase, and it is there that the fragrant flowers of 'Apricot Angelique' will bring the greatest satisfaction.

Planting and care

Place the 'Apricot Angelique' tulips in a sunny or partially shaded spot from late September to December for spring flowering. Plant the bulbs in a light and well-drained soil, loosened to a depth of 15cm (6in). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart without touching each other to create a mass effect that will give a more decorative appearance. The care required is very easy. Simply water regularly, especially during dry winters, and cut the flower stalks after flowering. Allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them.
