Description

The Tulip 'Charming Lady' offers a very beautiful peony-like flower, double, with pale salmon-orange colour mixed with almond green, enhanced by warmer shades of caramel and very soft pink. All these shades tend to become brighter as the days go by. It blooms late, in April-May, perched on a firm and sturdy stem that withstands bad weather. Beautiful like a sunset, this tulip complements all the colours of the garden, in flowerbeds as well as in spring bouquets.

The Tulip 'Charming Lady' belongs to the lily family. Of horticultural origin, obtained in 1994 in the Netherlands, it is currently classified in the group of 'Late Double Tulips', whose main characteristic is to have very double and crumpled flowers, carried by sturdy stems. 'Charming Lady' is of medium size (40-45 cm (16-18in)) and its flower is very doubled and well opened. It shows excellent holding power. Its colour palette includes orange, soft pink, complemented by caramel notes with a hint of pale green. At full bloom, the bright yellow heart of the flower becomes very visible, while the petals turn bright pink. The fragrance adds an additional charm, and it is a real favorite, especially when its buds slowly open in a vase, gradually shedding petals. The flowering starts relatively late, in May, when other tulips have already faded long ago.

Varied colours, tender or vibrant, opulent and naive flowers, late double tulips bring fantasy and romance in pots or in sunny gardens, alongside the most beautiful spring blooms. The tulip 'Charming Lady' can be paired with pastel tulips like 'Angelic' and 'Maureen Double', or, on the contrary, dark ones like 'Queen of the Night'. Don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flowerbeds, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for bouquets, as they last a long time in a vase, and it is there that the fragrant flowers of 'Charming Lady' will bring the greatest satisfaction.

Planting and care

Plant your 'Charming Lady' tulips as soon as possible in a well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 10 cm (4in) (Bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stalks and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly and we recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarellas, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts, Cypress Spurge at the forefront of your flowerbeds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and throughout the season, they will elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves.
