Description

Tulipa 'Gold Fever' is a recent variety belonging to the series of peony-flowered tulips, which are remarkable for their large double corollas that bloom a little later than others. This one displays beautiful yellow flowers softened with pearly reflections. This solitary flower blooms in April-May, perched on a thick 45cm (18in) stem. It is perfect in beds, on patios, or in bouquets.

Tulipa 'Gold Fever' belongs to the Liliaceae family and was recently obtained in the Netherlands. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the group of 'Late Double Tulips', whose main characteristic is to present very double and crumpled flowers, carried by sturdy stems. 'Gold Fever' is of medium size (40 to 45cm (16 to 18in)). It bears beautiful cup-shaped double flowers, blooming a little like a florist's ranunculus. Its banana yellow colour is very uniform. It is a true favourite, especially when its buds slowly open in a vase, gradually shedding petals like a shower of pearly petals. The flowering starts relatively late, in May, when other tulips have already withered.

With their rich colours and opulent flowers, late double tulips bring fantasy and romance to pots or sunny gardens, alongside the most beautiful spring blooms or pastel tulips like 'Orange Angelique' and 'Maureen Double', or dark ones like 'Queen of the Night'. The small blue flowers of forget-me-nots are very complementary to its yellow colour. When designing your flower beds, you must consider the height and flowering period of the tulips, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant extra bulbs for bouquets, as they make superb cut flowers that last a long time in a vase

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 15cm (6in) (bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch each other. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stalks and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting heuchera, tiarella, brunnera, bleeding heart, or Euphorbia cyparissia at the forefront of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips, and will elegantly conceal the tulip's yellowed leaves
