Description

The 'Melrose' Early Double Tulip is an early double flowering tulip that offers pink petals with wide white edges arranged in an open cup shape. You can pair it with pink or purple tulips for harmonious combinations. The enormous flowers stand on 30cm (12in) tall stems. Perched on the stems well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the flowers are all different but share the same pink and white colouration. It blooms in early spring from April onwards, just after the early single tulips.

The 'Melrose' Early Double Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Originally horticultural, it is currently classified in the group of "Early Doubles", whose main characteristic is large flowers with numerous petals, all at roughly the same height.

Unrivaled for bringing spring colour to pots or sunny gardens, don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your borders, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few extra bulbs for cutting, as they make beautiful long-lasting cut flowers.

Tulip species are found in most of the Old World, from Western Europe to China and Japan, including Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution range also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as it could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips thrive in moist to dry soil. Plant them in a sunny or partially shaded location. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly. We recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarelles, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts, Cyparissia Spurge, at the forefront of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colors of your tulips and throughout the season, they will elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves.
