Description

Tulipa, Renown Late Single Tulip produces a giant, vibrant carmine red flower, with a classic elongated shape at the end of the tulip season, in May. Late single tulips are often underestimated but they perfectly complement perennials with their pure colours and are good for cut flowers.

The 'Renown' Tulip belongs to the Lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 5, which is characterized by late-season flowering. It will reach a height of 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24in) when in bloom. The large, elongated, elegant and pure-coloured flowers are perched on stems well above the widely lanceolate leaves. It flowers in May - June, making it useful in the garden.

Renown, like all late single tulips, has a unique charm in the garden. It goes well in large beds, accompanied by perennials such as peonies or pastel-toned ravenelle wallflowers which will maximize the flowering period of the beds. It can also be planted in borders, rockeries, flowerbeds, pots and containers. This tulip is also beautiful on balconies and terraces. It is ideal for creating elegant bouquets. When using it in a vase, only a small amount of water is needed, just enough to cover the bottom! If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Regarding botanical species: tulip species are found in most of the Old World, from Western Europe to China and Japan, through Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution range also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

There are various wild species, many of which are endangered. They are either large tulips from cultivated fields, the most well-known being the Agen tulip (Tulipa agenensis), or small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, they are called "botanical tulips," and one of the most common is the wild tulip (Tulipa sylvestris), which often used to grow sheltered by vines and whose subspecies australis is known as the southern tulip.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in) and 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Renown will grow well in soil which is moist to dry in summer, in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Once flowering is complete, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.
