Description

The Viserba 3 Aubergine is a 60cm (24in) tall vegetable plant, ideal for pots. Cultivated for its fleshy fruits marbled with violet and cream, its flesh is consumed cooked and is essential in ratatouille. Sow from February to April for a harvest 5 months later.

The aubergine was introduced to Europe around the 14th century in Spain and then in France in the 17th century. It has been cultivated in India and China since ancient times. Aubergine is eaten cooked, stuffed with meat or cream, baked, and is used in the composition of ratatouille. Eggplant has calming and diuretic properties and contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B5, C, and PP, as well as iron and calcium.

Aubergines require a supply of well-rotted compost (3 kg/m²) in late autumn or early spring.

Harvest: Between July and October. Aubergines are harvested as needed and as they develop.

Storage: Between July and October. Aubergines can be stored for a few days in a cool place.

Gardener's tip: Maintain regular weeding and hoeing. Prune the ends of the branches to facilitate fruit enlargement.

Planting and care

Sowing

The seeds are sown from February, in a warm and well-lit place (ideally in the house as the optimal germination temperature is between 24 and 30°C) in seed trays or pots filled with good seed compost. Germination usually takes between 4 and 8 days.

To facilitate sometimes unpredictable germination, keep the seeds in the lower part of the refrigerator (4 to 5°C) for a few days.

When the young plants have 5 to 6 leaves, transplant them if necessary into pots and place them in a warm location in a cold frame or under a tunnel.

Maintenance

The plants should be transplanted when there is no longer a risk of frost, at a distance of 60cm (24in) in all directions.
