Primula Crescendo Mix - Oxlip

The 'Crescendo' Primrose is a very hardy horticultural selection. The plants sometimes bear 2 or 3 flowering stems at the same time, even as early as December. They come in various vivid colours, ranging from white to yellow, pink, red, purple, and even indigo, surrounding a golden yellow heart. Floriferous and early, this remarkable evergreen biennial, derived from our wood cuckoo, will thrive in partial shade or gentle sunlight, in a humus-bearing, fertile and moist soil.

The Primula eliator, also known as the Tall Primrose or Wood Primrose, is a herbaceous perennial plant that belongs to our native flora and is usually found in the partial shade of clear undergrowth or on the edge of forests. When it abounds, the cuckoo is an indicator of ancient forests, relatively undisturbed by human activity.

This plant has produced many short-lived perennial hybrids, mostly cultivated as biennial plants, through hybridization with the Common Primrose (Primula vulgaris), such as the Crescendo F1 selection in a mix. Planted in autumn, the primroses in this mix flower from December to April. On each plant, 2 or 3 floral stems 25 cm (10in) tall each bear bouquets with 4 to 5 single flowers, with a yellow heart. Their intense and varied colours are well highlighted by evergreen foliage in rosettes of large dark green corrugated leaves, which are ornamental even outside of the flowering period.

The eliator primroses are less well-known than the stemless primroses, but they have their own advantages: they are taller, hardier, more perennial, and their flowering is also more spectacular. They are excellent companions for shade-loving and cool undergrowth perennials such as heucheras, Brunnera, Anemone nemorosa, pansies, horned violets, or hostas. They can also be used to decorate the terrace, window, or balcony, planted in planters that will brighten up the dreary winter days. They also hold up very well in a simple little bouquet, a rare gift that is always a pleasure to give or receive at this time of year.
