Description
With their frilly petals, the pansies from the Viola x wittrockiana 'Frizzle Sizzle' Mix selection have something unique about them, fluttering in a whole range of shimmering colors - blue, purple, wine, gold, and white. Some are bicoloured and each displays a beautiful darker central blotch. The plants are compact and bushy, flowering from late winter and throughout spring, with an abundant second blooming in autumn. These hardy biennials thrive in cool climates, in humus-rich soil, in full sun or partial shade.
Garden pansies, sometimes called Swiss giant pansies, are actually hybrids grouped in the Viola x wittrockiana group. They belong to the Violaceae family and are mostly grown as annuals or biennials, though they are actually short-lived perennials. The 'Frizzle Sizzle' F1 Mix variety is a very beautiful hybrid. It produces bushy plants that quickly form compact rounded clumps, measuring 15 cm (5.9 in) in all directions. They bloom from late winter to late spring, and from late summer to the onset of winter. Only frost and intense heat put a damper on their exuberant flowering. 'Frizzle Sizzle' F1 Mix pansies have large open flowers, 6 to 7 cm (2.4 - 2.8 in) in diameter. The petals have frilly edges, resembling crumpled silk. Some are plain, while others are bicoloured. Depending on the plants, the flowers are adorned with 3, either black or darker, blotches at the base of the petals, around a tiny bright yellow and white heart. The medium green leaves are elliptical and broadly crenated .
In the garden, pansies are at their best in window boxes, on the windowsill, where you can have them right under your nose whilst keeping them sheltered from the cold. Combine them with Heucheras, forget-me-nots, small daffodils, and tulips... or even with grasses like Japanese sedge for a graphic, contemporary effect. The blue-green of glaucous fescues will also enhance them beautifully.
Pansy petals are edible, their colours will bring a touch of originality to your salads and pastries. For this, grow them as you would grow your own vegetables, as naturally as possible.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
