Description

The 'Cool Wave® Lemon' Pansy is a latest-generation hybrid variety of Viola x wittrockiana, belonging to a series of very spreading plants with a dense habit, offering brightly coloured flowers for a very long period, even in winter and despite inclement weather. It is a biennial plant that blooms from October to April, with a trailing habit that is particularly suited for hanging baskets, as well as for use as ground cover in flower beds. Its flowering in a range of soft and bright yellow shades brings life to all floral compositions and brightens up the shortest days of the year.

Garden pansies, sometimes called giant Swiss pansies, are actually hybrids grouped in the Viola x wittrockiana group. They belong to the violet family and are most often grown as annuals or biennials, although they are theoretically perennial but have a short lifespan.

The 'Cool Wave®' series, developed in the USA, brings together a collection of pansies that are unique in their very spreading habit. They are very well-branched and quickly form a clump that can reach 20 cm (7.9 in) in height and 30 to 40 cm (15.7 in) in width. Their growth can be enhanced with fertiliser applied every 15 days. They demonstrate remarkable floriferousness, from autumn to spring. The 'Cool Wave® Lemon' selection has numerous small serrated leaves, of medium green color and elliptical shape. Above these, countless small flowers measuring 3 to 4 cm (1.6 in) when open, composed of five rounded petals that slightly overlap. They are dressed in shades of yellow, ranging from butter to lemon.

When planted in summer, they will flourish as early as autumn. Vigorous and hardy, these Pansies withstand unfavorable weather conditions and tolerate periods of frost, even the most severe. You will see them wilt and then revive as temperatures soften. They will keep you company throughout winter, while being more discreet, and continue to bloom abundantly in spring.

If you love them in the garden you will greatly appreciate them in window boxes, to enjoy while keeping warm inside. You can associate them with primroses, Wallflowers, Grape Hyacinths, Daisies, and even with grasses like Japanese Sedge for a graphic effect in a contemporary style. Combine them with Heucheras and Tulips. The bluish green of glaucous fescues also highlights them well. Their colours will go well with orange and blue, to give a bohemian feel.

Pansy petals are edible and their colours will bring a touch of originality to your salads and pastries. For this purpose, think of growing them as you would your vegetables: in the most natural way possible.

Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible into pots, or directly into flower beds.

Planting and care

The plant plugs of 'Cool Wave® Lemon' pansies must be transplanted as soon as they are received, directly into pots or containers. Monitor moisture levels and regularly apply fertilizer (about twice a month).

If you wish to grow them in open ground, first transplant them into pots. Pay attention to watering but do not saturate the soil. There is no need to keep them in a greenhouse; just avoid exposing them to scorching sun . Leave for a good month and then plant in their final location.

Remove faded flowers as they appear, to stimulate the production of new buds.
