Description

The 'Cool Wave® Red Wing' Pansy is a hybrid variety of Viola x wittrockiana with very unique colours. Three yellow spotted petals topped with two burgundy petals, along with whiskers, make up its mischievous face. Its trailing habit and extremely generous flowering period from October to April make it an essential ally for hanging baskets. Resistant to bad weather, it also carpets the borders of flower beds, brightening them up with its vibrant tones.

The 'Cool Wave®' series corresponds to a new generation of trailing pansies. They have excellent branching and form a clump that can reach 20 cm (7.9 in) in height and 20 to 40 cm (7.9 - 15.7 in) in width. This can be further enhanced if you fertilise them every 15 days. They thrive perfectly in balcony planters thanks to their trailing habit, and offer impressive floriferousness. An ephemeral perennial plant, cultivated in European latitudes as a biennial, this viola has numerous small crenate leaves, of a medium green color and elliptical shape. Above them, countless small flowers measuring 3 to 4 cm (1.2 - 1.6 in), composed of five petals. The very cheerful yellow and burgundy colours of 'Cool Wave® Red Wing' are adorned with whiskers. Their petals are edible so feel free to pick a few flowers to sprinkle on your dishes,  (as long as they are grown without any chemical treatment).

Planted in summer, they will bloom from autumn. Vigorous, these pansies withstand unfavourable weather conditions and tolerate periods of frost, even the most severe. You will see them wilt and come back to life once the frost has passed. They will keep you company throughout the winter, albeit more discreetly, and continue to bloom in spring.

Joyful and lively, 'Cool Wave® Red Wing' Pansies' should be kept close to the house to enjoy - in window boxes, in pots near entrances, and on the terrace. However, since they are accommodating you can also place them at the front of flowerbeds to catch the eye; they will easily fit in amongst spring bulbs. Placed close to crocuses they will enliven their yellow colour, and they will illuminate Snake's Head Fritillaries.

Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible into pots, or directly into flower beds.

Planting and care

Transplant the plugs of 'Cool Wave® Red Wing' pansies directly into pots or planters upon receipt. Monitor moisture levels and regularly apply fertiliser (approximately twice a month).

To plant in the ground, first transplant into buckets. Keep an eye on watering but do not over-saturate the soil. No need to keep them in a greenhouse, they will be fine in a site that is not scorching. After about a month you can transplant them directly into their final position.

Remove faded flowers as they appear to encourage the growth of new buds.
