Description

Hybrid pansies or Viola hybrida from the selection 'F1 Carrera Autumn Berries' offer an abundance of large flowers in a range of warm autumnal tones. The petals dress in red, pink, purple, orange, and yellow, strongly accentuated by a large central black macule. A perfect variety to brighten gardens and balconies in autumn, and again in late winter, reaching its peak between March and June. These biennial hybrid pansies are early, vigorous, and floriferous, easy to grow in humus-rich and moist soil, in a sunny or partially shaded site.

Garden pansies, sometimes called giant Swiss pansies, are actually hybrids in the group Viola x wittrockiana. They belong to the violet family and are most often grown as annuals or biennials, although they are technically perennials, but short-lived. The variety 'F1 Carrera Autumn Berries' produces branching plants that quickly form compact clumps, 15 to 20 cm (7.9 in) tall and 20 cm (7.9 in) wide. Flowering occurs as early as October and lasts until the end of spring. The 6 cm (2.4 in) wide flowers, well open, are adorned with various shades of violet, yellow, pink, red, and orange. The centre is occupied by a tiny bright yellow and white heart. The plant has 2 types of leaves, the lower ones are ovate with dentate margins, and the upper ones are narrower and shorter.

Plant alongside e.g. primroses, wallflowers, grape hyacinths, daisies, and even grasses such as Japanese sedge for a graphic effect with a contemporary feel. Combine them with heucheras and tulips. The blue of fescue grass also enhances them well.

The petals of pansies are edible, and their colours will bring a touch of originality to your salads and pastries. For this purpose, think of growing them as you would your vegetables - in the most natural way possible.

Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible into pots, or directly into flower beds.

Planting and care

Very floriferous and fast-growing, pansies are hungry and appreciate a sunny or partially shaded site. They thrive in a humus-rich, neutral to acidic, moist and fertile soil. Feed them with a liquid fertiliser for containers once or twice a week during the growing period. Water regularly but not excessively. Regularly remove faded flowers to promote new blooms.
