I received them as 'plug plants' in the autumn and was hoping to have flowers all winter. They bloomed a month ago. Nevertheless, they are very beautiful... it was worth the wait after all.

Description

Viola wittrockiana 'Mariposa Peach Shades' are hybrid pansies that form small compact tufts with a rounded habit. They are covered in medium-sized flowers in shades of antique pink, old rose, peach, salmon, yellow or orange, depending on the plants. They are all bicolour or tricolour, and their petals appear to be woven with transparent silk. These biennials are cold-resistant. They quickly recover and bloom in spring. They are also heat-resistant, ensuring a long and high-quality flowering period. They are easy to grow in humus-bearing moist soil, in a sunny or semi-shaded location.

Garden pansies, sometimes called Swiss giant pansies, are hybrids in the Viola x wittrockiana group. They belong to the Violaceae family and are most often grown as annuals or biennials, although they are theoretically short-lived perennials. The 'Mariposa Peach Shades' variety is a bushy plant that quickly forms compact tufts with a rounded habit, reaching about 20cm (8in) in all directions. It blooms from late winter to late spring, or from late spring to late summer. Only intense heat slows down its exuberant flowering. However, you can move them to a shady spot to prevent heat exhaustion. 'Mariposa Peach Shades' pansies bear fully open medium-sized flowers, 4 to 5cm (2in) in diameter. They boast slightly faded pink or bright yellow-orange shades, barely veined with darker colours, and a silky texture. Some of them are bicolour, with a large maculate spot in a strong colour, while others mix three different shades on their petals. Depending on the plants, they are adorned with 3 black macules at the base of the petals, which have a tiny bright yellow and white eye. The medium green leaves are elliptical and widely crenate.

Pansies are wonderful in the garden, but they also work beautifully in a pot on a windowsill to be enjoyed up close. They look perfect alongside primroses, wallflowers, grape hyacinths, and daisies. They even go well with grasses like Japanese sedge for a contemporary effect. Combine them with heucheras, forget-me-nots, and tulips. The blue-green of glaucous fescues also enhances their beauty.

Pansy petals are edible, and their colours will add a unique touch to salads and pastries. For this use, consider growing them just like you would grow your vegetables, in the most natural way possible.

Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible in pots and containers, or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

Pansies thrive in humus-rich, neutral to acidic, moist and fertile soil. A quality horticultural compost will be very suitable. They appreciate a sunny or semi-shaded exposure. They are fast-growing and produce an abundance of blooms, making them hungry plants. They need to be fed with a liquid plant food for containers once or twice a week during the growth period. Water regularly but without excess. Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms.
