Clematis armandii Little White Charm - Evergreen Clematis

'Little White Charm' is a armandii clematis with uncommon characteristics in the genus Clematis: Its beautiful shiny evergreen foliage easily covers large supports such as arches, pergolas, and arbors. And its multiple small white flowers welcome spring early by perfuming the surroundings. Moderately hardy, it prefers mild to slightly cool climates.

Belonging to the Renonculaceae family and originating from China, this Armand clematis likes fertile, neutral, and rather moist soil. It appreciates a sunny or partially shaded exposure, with its base imperatively in the shade. It can withstand cold temperatures, but not temperatures below -10°C (14°F). It will thrive better if protected from wind and late frosts. However, it does not like stagnant moisture, so the substrate must be well-draining and watering should be moderate (during its establishment).

It is a perennial that produces long stems, reaching up to 4m (13ft) long. These stems bear beautiful evergreen leaves, long (often measuring at least 10cm (4in)), lanceolate, and with distinct veins. They form a beautiful dark green mantle that welcomes early and abundant flowering. From March onwards, numerous small cruciate white flowers, barely 5cm (2in) in diameter and grouped in panicles, reveal slightly greenish prominent stamens. The slender and airy appearance is emphasized by the tapered tepals. The overall delicate appearance gives off a fragrance reminiscent of orange blossom with hints of vanilla.

The flowering of 'Little White Charm' is a boon for year-round greening of passage supports, such as arches at the entrances of the house. It brings glossy foliage with deep tones and perfumes the entrances from spring. It also colonizes privet hedges, unsightly exposed fences, and can crown paths between different areas of the garden.
