Description

The Arabella Clematis is a beautiful climbing perennial, "Queen of lianas" that bears large flowers ranging from dark blue to a softer blue, creating a splendid range of blue hues.

From June to September, this robust plant reaches a height of 2m (7ft) and forms a wall of star-shaped flowers with 5 petals, bluish-violet with cream anthers, measuring 7 to 10 cm (4in) in diameter. Its deciduous ovate, lanceolate, pale green leaves are 15cm (6in) long and are carried by voluble stems that twine around their support with tendrils. At the end of flowering, decorative fruits appear, topped with feathery silver-gray styles.

Originally from the northern hemisphere, Arabella Clematis thrives in a clay-siliceous, well-worked, deep, moist and fertile soil, in a sunny location with the base in shade. Planting ground cover plants is recommended. It is also susceptible to aphids.

Arabella Clematis is perfect for dressing trellises, fences, pylons, arches, as well as trees and bushes. It will also thrive in a container on a terrace! Combine several species of clematis or pair them with climbing roses!

Tips: Avoid excessive fertilization, as it stimulates foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch to prevent excessive moisture, which can lead to wilt disease.

Planting and care

The Arabella Clematis is planted in spring or autumn at a depth of 8cm (3in), with the root ball laid flat on the soil rather than vertically as usual. The head in the sun and the foot in the shade. Cover the foot with a small mound of soil to encourage new shoots. After planting, cut back the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Tie them loosely to help the plant cling on its own later. The pruning afterwards will involve cutting back all the previous year's stems to 20cm (8in) from the ground in March.
