This clematis, planted in a pot, initially started off very well, even bloomed, then it began to flower and then it withered. I reported the issue and they kindly sent me another young plant. Unfortunately, it doesn't look very healthy either. Maybe the rainy climate doesn't suit this variety? It's a shame, I really like it so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Description

Clematis 'Westerplatte' is an old variety derived from C. patens, which is highly sought after for the depth of its velvety red colour. This modest-sized variety grows quickly, producing large and beautiful single flowers with a pleasant fragrance. They bloom from June to September. It will look magnificent in a pot, paired with the white flowers of C. 'Mme Lecoultre'.

The genus Clematis belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. 'Westerplatte' is a horticultural variety obtained in Poland in 1992 by Brother Stefan Franczak. It is derived from Clematis patens, a woody clematis native to Japan. It is a Group 3 clematis, flowering from June-July to September on new shoots. It is a woody climbing perennial plant with short stems, reaching 1.5 to 2m (5 to 7ft) in height. Every spring, a multitude of stems emerge from its base. The medium green deciduous leaves are either composed of 3 ovate to lanceolate leaflets measuring 10 to 15cm (6in) long, or are simple and ovate measuring 7 to 10cm (4in) long. The single flowers are of the patens type. They are outward-facing, have 6 petals, and form a wide cup 10 to 12cm (5in) in diameter. The centre is occupied by red stamens. This clematis clings to support or host plant through voluble stems with petioles transformed into tendrils. This variety is highly hardy.

Plant your clematis alongside climbing roses or vines to extend the flowering period of walls and pergolas until the end of summer. It is a diverse genus, with varieties available in all colours, shapes, and sizes. Take advantage of their easy cultivation to give your garden a romantic and bohemian touch. The exquisite 'Westerplatte' variety will thrive perfectly in a pot on a balcony or next to a doorway, embracing a small bamboo structure to welcome visitors with its unique colours.

Planting and care

Clematis plants like to keep their base cool. Choose a sunny or semi-shaded exposure. In a sunny exposure, shade the base of your clematis with a ground cover plant or a perennial geranium. Work the soil to a depth of 20cm (8in), lightened with good quality compost. Plant it by covering the root ball with 3cm (1in) of soil. Water regularly and generously during the first few weeks. Do not overwater, as stagnant water can lead to the development of fungus at the base of the plant.

Clematis plants attach themselves using their tendrils. To promote their growth, provide them with a trellis or let them dress the trunk of a tree by placing a wire mesh against the trunk for the clematis to climb. Clematis plants also enjoy growing freely on neighbouring plants.

You can prune them in March, up to 30cm (12in) from the soil.
